Tommy Sheridan has been convicted of perjury following a 12-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

The 46-year-old former MSP was found guilty of lying during his successful defamation case against the News of the World newspaper in 2006.

He sued after it printed allegations that he was an adulterer who had attended a swingers' club.

Sheridan has been given bail and faces a prison term when he is sentenced on 26 January.

His wife Gail, also 46, was acquitted last week after the Crown withdrew charges against her.

A couple of female members of the jury were in tears when the verdict was read out.

Following the verdict, Sheridan's solicitor, Amar Anwar, read a statement on his client's behalf outside the court.
'No apologies'

In the statement, Mr Sheridan said: "For three years my wife and I have faced charges of perjury. Today, I was convicted and Gail was acquitted of any crime.

"I have fought the power of News International all my political life, and I make no apologies for taking on the might of Rupert Murdoch.

"Several million pounds of public money was spent investigating me and my wife.

"Is it not time that similar resources were devoted to investigating the activities of the News of the World."

After this was read out, Gail Sheridan gave her reaction to the waiting media.

"I would like to thank everybody from across Scotland for their wonderful support throughout the last six years that they've given to Tommy and I," she said.

"Our family and our real friends, our real friends, have stood by us. I have and will always stand by Tommy."
'Serious offence'

At this point, a highly emotional Sheridan hugged and kissed his wife.

Minutes before, the politician was found guilty of five allegations under one charge on the indictment.

The last remaining allegation, that he had a sexual relationship with former News of the World columnist Anvar Khan, was deleted.

In coming to their verdict, the 14 members of the jury ruled that: Sheridan did tell a meeting of the SSP executive committee on 9 November 2004 that he had visited Cupid's in Manchester in 1996 and 2002 with Ms Khan.

The jury found that party members Keith Baldassara and Alan McCombes did state at the meeting that they had previously raised the issue of Sheridan attending a sex club in Manchester with him and that he admitted that it was true.

It was also found that he did visit Cupid's with Andrew McFarlane, Gary Clark, Ms Khan and Katrine Trolle on 27 September 2002 and that he did have a sexual relationship with Katrine Trolle between 1 January and 31 December 2005.

Following the majority verdict, advocate depute Alex Prentice moved for sentencing, giving a short biography of Sheridan's political career and mentioning previous convictions for breach of the peace.

Lord Bracadale requested background reports and said any submissions by Sheridan could be made at the sentencing hearing next month.

The judge told Sheridan: "You have been convicted of the serious offence of perjury and must return to court expecting to begin a prison sentence."

He excused the jury from service for eight years, telling them it had been a "long and arduous" trial.

In the aftermath of the verdict, some of the main parties involved have been giving their reaction.

Det Ch Sup Malcolm Graham, of Lothian and Borders Police, said the perjury investigation, which Sheridan attacked in court as "a vendetta" had followed on from "the comments of Lord Turnbull, the presiding judge at the civil case in 2006".

The Scottish editor of the News of the World, Bob Bird, said they were "pleased justice has been done"

"All of the evidence from the civil action brought by Mr Sheridan was considered and inquiries made it clear that perjured evidence had been given during the civil hearing," he said.

In a statement, the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP), which Sheridan formerly led, said the verdict would now define him.

It stated: "By his actions over six years, Tommy Sheridan has disgraced himself and negated his political contribution to the socialist cause over 25 years.

"History will now record that he did more harm to the socialist cause in Scotland than any good he ever did it."

Unsurprisingly, Solidarity, the party Sheridan formed after leaving the SSP, offered its continuing support.

"Tommy Sheridan's only crime has been to speak truth to power for as long as he has been involved in socialist politics," it said.
'Proud comrades'

"He is a working class fighter who has waged war on poverty and injustice where ever he has found it.

"We in Solidarity are proud to call ourselves comrades and friends of Tommy Sheridan."

Sheridan's mother, Alice, said her son and his wife would remain strong.

She added: "I'll cope - that's my son, he's done nothing but good for people all his life."

The verdict, which took six hours to deliver, brings to a close what is thought to be the longest-running perjury case in Scottish legal history.

Its beginning can be traced to Sheridan's successful defamation action against the News of the World in August 2006.

What now? - Legal view

Tommy Sheridan can seek to appeal his perjury conviction.

This is done by way of a "first sift" where a single judge is asked to decide whether there are stateable grounds for appeal.

If the judge decides that they are not, that refusal can be appealed to two judges.

If they decide against him, that is final.

If there are stateable grounds of appeal, different judges will decide whether or not to overturn his conviction.

Sentencing is a matter for Lord Bracadale, the trial judge.

A sentence of between three and five years would not be surprising.

* Should Sheridan have been prosecuted?
* Sheridan perjury charges in full

The civil case tore the SSP apart as 11 colleagues testified against Sheridan, saying that he had admitted attending the sex club during a party meeting in 2004.

Sheridan won the case at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, however, and was awarded £200,000 damages.

Two months later, Edinburgh's procurator fiscal ordered Lothian and Borders Police to investigate allegations of perjury during the case.

During the investigation, the News of the World also published details of a video tape, secretly recorded by Sheridan's best man George McNeilage, in which the politician was alleged to have admitted visiting a swingers' club in Manchester.

When the police probe concluded, Sheridan and his wife were charged with perjury.

The resulting trial at the High Court in Glasgow, which got under way in October, saw dozens of witnesses give evidence against the former MSP.

During the second week of the trial, Sheridan released his defence QC Maggie Scott and opted to represent himself - just as he had done successfully during the 2006 defamation action.

Like the civil case again, a number of former SSP colleagues stated that he had admitted the sex club visit at an executive meeting of the party in November 2004.

The trial also heard allegations of affairs with journalist Anvar Khan and former SSP colleague Katrine Trolle.
'Not credible or reliable'

The video tape, which Sheridan's best man George McNeilage sold to the News of the World, also formed a central part of the prosecution case.

In the final weeks of the trial, perjury charges against Gail Sheridan were dropped and she was acquitted.

Prosecutor Alex Prentice QC said it was no longer in the public interest to pursue them.

The number of perjury allegations against Mr Sheridan was also reduced from 18 to six.

As the trial came to a close, the Crown's case centred on three key areas - what Sheridan was alleged to have said at the SSP meeting in November 2004, the alleged visit to the Manchester swingers' club and the secret video tape recorded by Mr McNeilage.

In a marathon closing speech, lasting five hours over two days, Sheridan told the jury that the Crown witnesses were not credible or reliable.

He accused police of conducting "a vendetta" against him during their investigation and claimed the tape was a fabrication designed to incriminate him.

The jury, however, chose to believe the Crown's case, and convicted him of perjury.

Hello, Tron, and welcome to probably the only reply this thread will ever receive.

Sadly, Tommy Sheridan's travails have not been big news across the water - I'm not even sure if they got reported in England. But aye, it is a terrible thing for this country, and a disgracefully brazen set-up. I'm not saying that he didn't sleep with those women (though I kind of doubt it in Khan's case), and that he therefore isn't guilty of perjury, because I can't know for sure - but nevertheless, he has been brought low for political reasons by vested interests and secret powers.

I kept looking for the often glaringly obvious hands of our intelligence services in the case, but there seems to be no clear evidence of that (I do wonder how Trolle and Khan make their living, though). Then I remembered that we have unofficial intelligence services too - the Murdoch press - and they've been right there in the picture from the start.

The Socialist Party had won six seats in a very short space of time, on an anti-war and anti-capitalist platform, and looked set to grow further. Their leader was known for his history of spectacularly successful militant actions against unfair taxes and humiliating warrant sales. Do you know why a private debt collector can't just walk into your house in Scotland and start valuing your worldly goods, with or without your consent? It's not just because he's scared of getting stabbed with a junkie's needle. It's 'cause of Tommy Sheridan. For the Poll Tax resistance, for the ending of warrant sales, for the protests against Faslane (which is supposed to be secret installation), and for accusing the government of facilitating the Afghan heroin trade, he had to be destroyed. Also for being sucessful and well-liked as a socialist politician.

It's been a hell of an emotional roller-coaster ride, the trial. When his wife got the charges against her dropped, I misheard it as all charges against both of them being dropped, and was ecstatic for a while. I'm sorry to say I celebrated. Then not long later, with the monstrous hangover still on me, I hear that he's been convicted and faces up to six years in prison. That hurt.

Scotland needs a Socialist Party, but it has just committed suicide, with or without the direct involvement of intelligence agents. With remaining members like Rosie Kane, George McNeilage, and all the other turncoats against Tommy, the SSP might as well disband. They're finished. In Rosie and McNeillage's cases, I'll be glad to see the back of them.

It's still a tragedy, though. Written by the Murdoch press, in their usual lurid style.

Ha! I'll make it up to two, can't say my contribution will be anywhere near as informative as yours though.

I haven't followed this with anything like the attention that now, post verdict, it is obvious that I should have but I can't say I'm surprised.

Yeah, it is. Nothing's changed. What I can't understand (if Kane and McNeillage and the other SSP turncoats are acting "honestly") is how they can be so ignorant of the trap they are leaping wholeheartedly into, and how they can be so blind to the fact that by getting rid of Tommy - and crowing about it, as if it was a victory, on TV - they have ENDED THEMSELVES politically. They seem to think that Sheridan is a proven liar now, but the SSP will march on. But the SSP consisted, almost entirely, of Tommy Sheridan. Even after he left and formed Solidarity (and what a dismal spectacle that was) the only reason people voted SSP was because they thought they were getting Tommy as a leader. Who votes for the fuckin party of George McNeillage?

If anyone ever did, they never will again.

Thank God there seems to be an expanding, almost apolitical, movement, fuelled only by rage and disgust at the unfairness of the incoming cuts - it's a bit like the early days of the Poll Tax revolt, really, from which Tommy sprang.

He was a great singer in his youth too. :eeyaa

Let's make this the longest thread on RI! Obscure Scottish politics FTW!

We Yanks need to search to find international news such as this, so thanks for posting Tron & Ahab's other leg.

Not really all that familiar with this issue or the characters involved, so I looked for a bit more and found this, from 2006:

'Sheridan trial shame has left my life in ruins'

"Her sexual past was laid bare, her boyfriend dumped her and she was labelled a perjurer. Now Katrine Trolle has fled Britain. Her claims about the socialist ex-leader were rejected by a libel jury, but she insists: 'I told the truth."

More here

I attempted to post photos of Sheridan & wife Gail; Katrine Trolle and Anvar Khan, but the board had reached its it quota and wouldn't allow it. A simple google image search will locate all. One public photo shows Sullivan whispering sweet nothings into Trolle's ear or maybe he's kissing her. The fellow standing by her other side looks tortured by it all.

But really, to condemn the entire socialist party because of the conduct of one individual seems a bit extreme. Hopefully, this wasn't a manufactured affair.

The Guardian wrote:Trolle loved her job as an occupational therapist in a locked psychiatric ward in a hospital on the outskirts of Dundee.

If she ever attended any recent SSP meetings it would've seemed like a busman's holiday.

The Guardian wrote:Last week Sheridan posed topless for Harry Benson, the renowned New York-based photojournalist, to verify his wife's evidence that he was 'hairy like an ape'. Benson, who was in Edinburgh for an exhibition celebrating 50 years of his work, asked if he could photograph Sheridan for a book of portraits.

FFS. Did Tommy not realise who he was playing against, and for what stakes? He must know they've been after him since the Poll Tax. They don't ever stop. He's achieved a great deal, in my view, as a political activist, and he's obviously aware that he's been targetted by Murdoch. But did he not think ahead, how these things could be used against him? It seems not. Perhaps he loved not wisely, but too well.

The Guardian wrote:Sheridan wants to win back the party leadership and is vowing to 'destroy the scabs' who 'collaborated with the enemy' during the trial. However, after a ferocious backlash from former allies who took offence at lifelong socialists being branded 'scabs', he then said he might quit politics, if his wife wanted him to, and retrain as a lawyer.

They were scabs. They are scabs. They were all on TV last night, scabbing it up to the max. When you betray a friend, for your own benefit, what are you? A scab.

Sadly, Tommy kind of did retrain himself as a lawyer, and that's one of the other reasons he's going to jail.

iamwhoiam wrote:But really, to condemn the entire socialist party because of the conduct of one individual seems a bit extreme. Hopefully, this wasn't a manufactured affair.

The problem is, the Scottish Socialist Party effectively was one individual, as far as national politics go, and all the other halfway-known individuals have just publically backstabbed him and cheered the fact that he's going to jail - they have cheered the fact that their only well-known member, their founder, a popular man in the country, just lost a case to News International.

The SSP effectively was Tommy Sheridan. Kind of like how Respect was George Galloway. There are other Socialist parties, quite a few of them in fact, but they don't have seats in the Parliament, and they don't look set to win any.

The SSP MSPs who are already there in the Parliament might be able to hold their seats, since politics is very local here. If they can keep the buses running and the schools and hospitals open in their constituencies, the Sheridan debacle won't matter. But they probably won't get any further towards national power, and that means none of the larger parties will have to accomodate them by building socialist policies into their manifestos.

'Tis a bummer. Plus, for all that Tommy is a bit annoying at times, it's absolutely shite that he found out just before Christmas that he might face six years. The man has kids. It's not like Assange, where there is any suggestion of sexual coercion - it was all consensual, even under the worst view... just a bit busy and crowded, by all accounts. Six fucking years for perjury. At his age, politically and personally, you don't really come back from that.

Well, it turned out being a three year sentence. He'll likely do 18th months in real terms. But the fact that he has been convicted for dishonesty, and that his sentence was for more than a year, means he is no longer eligible to stand for election to the Scottish Parliament ever again in his lifetime unless the laws are changed - job done, I suppose, for those who wanted rid of him.

The judge gave him some praise as he sent him down:

"On any view you were a highly effective and hard working politician.

"You supported individuals in the community. Both in the parliament and in the street, you were able to use your undoubted powers of oratory to press home your cause.

"You led the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) to considerable electoral success and your contributions to the anti-poll tax campaign and the abolition of warrant sales will become part of the fabric of Scottish social and political history.

"By pursuing, and persisting in the pursuit of, a defamation action against the proprietors of the News of the World you brought the walls of the temple crashing down not only on your own head but also on the heads of your family and your political friends and foes alike.

"You were repeatedly warned by the comrades that it would come to this."

Who needs the ownership class with comrades like these, eh? The walls of the temple. FFS.

Thankfully, it seems his wife Gail nowwon't be running against George Galloway for a Glasgow constituency, which was the stupidest idea I'd ever heard of. The first thing the left has to do is stop defeating itself at the polls by fielding multiple candidates who agree with each other on everything of substance, thus splitting the vote and letting Labour back in by default.

Sheridan’s life-style choices & legal shenanigans seem (career)-suicidally stupid & self-destructive – esp given the current political environment.

Talk about painting a target on your back. What the f**k IS it with these people ?!!…don’t get me started on Galloway’s Big Brother antics.

Any hint that News International were hacking his phone or did his indiscriminate willy-waving render that unnecesay ?

Sorry for the late reply, Semper, but yes, NOTW were most likely hacking his phone. George Galloway has already been offered an out-of-court settlement to prevent him bringing a case about the hacking of his own phone (which confirms that it was taking place more conclusively than any court case could) and Tommy's solicitor claims his phones were targetted during the trial. It would've been a miracle if his phones weren't, all things considered.

There have been some reasonably good documentaries about Andy Coulson, the tabloid phone hacking scandal, and the inordinate political sway held by the Murdoch press, on Dispatches recently, but you'll have seen 'em already. If not, here is an interesting excerpt from the original program, broadcast in 2010. I can't find the follow-up from early Feb 2011 on Youtube yet, but it was good, and mentioned the Sheridan trial and Coulson's appearance at it:
