The FBI is to reopen its investigation into disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein following Mail on Sunday revelations about his sexual exploitation of teenage girls and his links with high-profile individuals, including Prince Andrew.

The Bureau wants to interview Esptein’s former personal ‘masseuse’, Virginia Roberts, after she revealed last week that she was recruited as Epstein’s sex slave when she was just 15.

Last night, in an exclusive interview with The Mail on Sunday, Virginia confirmed she will fully co-operate with the new investigation, which could have serious implications for Epstein and embarrass Prince Andrew, who she met on three occasions.

‘I will talk to the FBI,’ Virginia said.‘I am anxious. I am still frightened of him because he has so much power. I had to put this behind me.

'But in the end this is not for me. It’s because I’m afraid there are a lot of girls still doing what I did for him, eight years after I left. I want to be the one who breaks the chain.’

The news comes as the Government appeared to withdraw support for the Prince’s role as a trade envoy, with Business Secretary Vince Cable refusing to say whether he should stay in the post.

A source close to the inquiry said the FBI decided to reopen the case because of Virginia’s revelations to The Mail on Sunday last week.
Speaking out: Virginia Roberts, pictured recently, said she is willing to be interviewed and 'break the chain'

He said: ‘Now that Virginia has come forward and identified herself as a victim who was flown around the world by Epstein for the purpose of committing a criminal act, this is being taken very seriously.

The FBI is interested in pursuing the allegations published by The Mail on Sunday.’

Now a married mother of three living in Australia, Virginia alleged that her services were offered to a number of politicians, businessmen and international statesmen.

She also met Prince Andrew. The first time was at the London house of Ghislaine Maxwell, daughter of the disgraced former media tycoon Robert Maxwell.

The second time was at Epstein’s grand New York townhouse and the third on Epstein’s private Caribbean island.

The new FBI investigation will undoubtedly be of grave concern to Prince Andrew, who was forced to accept that his continued friendship with the financier, a convicted child sex offender, was unwise.

On Friday, he severed all ties with Epstein – although the new investigation could reveal further damaging details of their association.

Virginia’s account of her meetings with the Prince was published under the restrictions of British libel laws, notoriously the most draconian in the Western world. There will be no such restraint on her testimony to FBI investigators.

It is highly likely that detectives will also wish to question the Prince as part of their investigation. If subpoenaed he may be forced to plead diplomatic immunity based on his role as business envoy for UK Trade and Investment. Last week David Cameron faced calls from the floor of the Commons to remove the Prince from his post.

If Andrew refuses to co-operate with US authorities he would, in all likelihood, be banned from entering the States, which would seriously affect his ability to fulfil his role as a trade envoy.

Virginia said: ‘I have lived with these secrets for years. Stepping forward wasn’t easy. My husband and family come first and I don’t want to do anything that could possibly hurt them.’
Revelation: Prince Andrew puts his arms around 17-year-old Virginia at Epstein's house

It is believed the new investigation will centre on Epstein’s procuring of young girls and paying them to provide sexual favours for his business associates at his homes in New York, Florida, the US Virgin Islands and New Mexico.

Epstein’s palatial houses were secretly covered by a network of hidden video cameras, raising concerns that compromising footage exists of a number of rich and powerful individuals useful to Epstein’s work as a money manager.

‘If Virginia’s allegations are correct, Epstein may have committed offences not covered by the non-prosecution agreement,’ our source said.

There is no suggestion of any sexual contact between Virginia and the Prince, or that Andrew knew that Epstein paid her to have sex with his friends.

The previous FBI investigation was shelved after Epstein’s lawyers struck a plea bargain with prosecutors at the US Attorney’s office in Southern Florida in which the money manager pleaded guilty to solicitation of prostitution and a single charge of procuring minors for prostitution.

The financier was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2008.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal that under the terms of the secret deal Virginia was assigned a lawyer, Robert Josefsberg, whose fees were paid by Epstein.

In a letter from the US Justice Department, Virginia was told Josefsberg would work out a settlement between her and Epstein.

Josefsberg attended America’s Yale Law School with Alan Dershowitz, who happened to be representing the tycoon during the criminal case.

Referring to the inadequacy of the original investigation, the source said: ‘Virginia was interviewed by phone from Australia for maybe 45 minutes before the secret plea bargain was cut.’

Virginia agreed the original questioning was insufficient but felt powerless to do anything about it. ‘I felt no one was listening to me,’ she said last night, ‘including maybe my own lawyers.

‘I told my lawyers I thought that some of the men I had to have sex with were powerful and rich, but they didn’t even show me pictures that would have helped me identify them.

‘I am happy that finally there are people who aren’t in Jeffrey’s pockets who are standing up to protect me and saying, “This was not right, this was not acceptable.” People who don’t want this to happen to their daughters.’

After the case, more than 20 other girls launched legal actions against Epstein. At least 17 have been settled out of court.

A spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida said last night: ‘We cannot comment, confirm or deny the existence of any investigation or on our intention to open or close a matter.’

Epstein’s little black book: 16 numbers for Andrew, 10 for Peter Mandelson (and Reinaldo)

It is an astonishing roll call of names which shines a fascinating light into the world of Jeffrey Epstein and the powerful network he established both here and in America.

The financier’s ‘little black book’ of contacts encompasses every conceivable sphere of influence, from politics and showbusiness to business and royalty. It lists numbers for former presidents, government Ministers, state senators, rock stars, actors and members of the British aristocracy.

There are 16 numbers listed for Prince Andrew under his title, The Duke of York. They include private and ex-directory numbers and there is also an email address.

A printout of the contacts book, which was kept online, was subpoenaed for use in one of the civil cases against Epstein and is considered important potential evidence if the reopened criminal case leads to new charges against the financier.

It includes the names of several of the men Virginia met while with Epstein. There are also numbers for massage businesses in the Virgin Islands and in the UK. There are lists headed ‘Massage – Florida’ and ‘Massage – New Mexico’ and ‘Massage – Paris’, featuring phone numbers of girls identified only by first names.

In the Paris list, one note says: ‘Stephan (better than Gypsy!)’ Another says: ‘Sonya (speaks little English’ and ‘Tanya (speaks no English)’.

The ‘book’ includes details for a number of British politicians, including Tony Blair – although the fact that it shows only his office address suggests this link, at least, was more one of ambition than substance.

There are also home numbers for Michael Heseltine, former Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward and Peter Mandelson.

Lord Mandelson’s entry features ten numbers, including direct lines, home numbers, a fax and mobile details for his partner, Reinaldo. Many are now out of date but it seems no coincidence that he and Prince Andrew have worked together in the past.

The Whitehall body that oversees Andrew’s duties as Britain’s special representative for international trade and investment is the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and was part of Lord Mandelson’s portfolio during his time as Business Secretary.

Lord Mandelson and Andrew also have a mutual close friend, the Kazakh-born socialite and businesswoman Goga Ashkenazi. Both men attended her 30th birthday party in February last year.

And Lord Mandelson was hired to speak at two events organised by Samruk-Kazyna, Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund which is effectively run by the President’s son-in-law, Timur Kulibayev.

Mr Kulibayev bought Prince Andrew’s marital home, Sunninghill, for £15 million three years ago – £3 million above the asking price. Last night Virginia Roberts told The Mail on Sunday: ‘I never heard of Jeffrey knowing Tony Blair, but he did know Peter Mandelson.

‘I remember him being at the house in New York and I was introduced to him at a dinner party.

He and Jeffrey talked business together. I assumed they were in business together.

‘I was never asked to give him [Mandelson] a massage.’

Bill Clinton, a known associate of Epstein’s, is listed under the name of one of his aides, Doug Bands. There are 21 contact numbers as well as fax numbers and email addresses.

‘Some of these are people whom we know accepted Jeffrey’s hospitality,’ a source says. ‘Some are

people like Tony Blair, who probably had no idea they were in there.’

Epstein's Girl Friday 'fixer': Dead tycoon's daughter Ghislaine Maxwell and the girls she hired for paedophile's stable

One woman has been a constant in the ever-shifting cast of females with which Jeffrey Epstein surrounds himself.

Ghislaine Maxwell, glamorous daughter of the late, disgraced newspaper tycoon Robert Maxwell, is different from the other women in Epstein’s life in many ways but, most obviously, at 49, she is a lot older. She is also Epstein’s Girl Friday, his fixer – central to his operation.

It was Ghislaine who, in 1998, recruited the 15-year-old Virginia Roberts to work as Epstein’s ‘masseuse’.

Meeting Epstein for the first time at his Palm Beach mansion, Virginia was led into the massage room by Ghislaine. After a bizarre interview conducted by a naked Epstein, Ghislaine told Virginia to follow her instructions.

‘She had me put oil on my hand, then she grabbed one of his feet and started to massage it. She told me to take his other foot,’ says Virginia. ‘Then she told me to take off my clothes. He had sex with me.

‘Ghislaine said, “She’s got a knack for it.” And I thought, “These are important people. I must be doing something right.” ’

Ghislaine had fled to New York after the death of her father, who fell off his yacht – named the Lady Ghislaine after his favourite child – in mysterious circumstances in 1991.

His death revealed a vast financial black hole at the heart of his Mirror Group, including the employees’ pension scheme.

In Britain, the Maxwell name was mud as fraud trials, bankruptcy and disgrace swirled around the family, but in America – with her charisma, love of the high life and an address book stuffed with well-connected friends – Ghislaine became a fixture on the Manhattan social scene.

She and Epstein soon became inseparable. There was talk first of marriage, then it was said that they were like ‘an old married couple’ but that Epstein would not marry her. It emerged only after an

FBI investigation into his sexual exploitation of teenagers that his interest lay in underage girls.

According to Virginia, Ghislaine helped smooth the way for Epstein to sexually molest the young girls recruited to ‘massage’ him.

But she also provided him with an entry into British society – including the friendship with Prince Andrew that lasted until Friday, when the Prince dramatically announced he was breaking off all contact.

Between 2000 and 2001, Andrew and Ghislaine were together on no fewer than eight occasions.

Epstein was present at four of the meetings – at the Mar-a-Lago club in Florida (from where Virginia was recruited), in Phuket, at a weekend party at Sandringham, and at Windsor Castle. In addition, Andrew has often been seen at Epstein’s grand New York townhouse.

Virginia says: ‘I once asked Ghislaine why she got as many girls as she did for Jeffrey, as she supposedly had been his girlfriend and they seemed to have a grounded but non-monogamous relationship. She replied, “It takes the pressure off me to have sex with him.”

‘She said she’d hit hard times. She had no money to her name. She was disgraced. Jeffrey offered her a job and then, I guess, because of her ability to procure girls for him and to teach us what he liked, she became a vital asset to him.

Different stories: Virginia Roberts had to dress as a schoolgirl while Nadia Bjorlin narrowly escaped at age 13

'The training she gave me was very thorough. It started on my first day at work following the “interview”. I began learning legitimate massage techniques.

‘She also taught me how to keep him emotionally happy. She said, “Be compliant. Always be cheerful. Always smile a lot.”

‘She told me that I should bring along any girlfriends I had who might be suitable. She said he liked white girls – no black girls, ever. If a girl was of any other heritage, she had to be a knockout beauty.

‘She also taught me what kind of clothes to buy. His favourite was to dress me as a schoolgirl, in pigtails and little pleated skirts, and knee socks. Ghislaine sent me to a dentist to have my teeth whitened and I went for Brazilian waxes. He wanted me to look pre-pubescent.

‘Ghislaine herself had flings with men, including a famous Hollywood star. Jeffrey didn’t mind that.He was very good to her.

'He bought her a house in New York, a house in London, a helicopter and a Mercedes convertible.

‘A British girl, Emmy Tayler, was very close to Ghislaine. Her job was to run errands for Ghislaine and do paperwork.

'Emmy wasn’t really Jeffrey’s type, being voluptuous and older. [She is now 36]. Jeffrey liked girls like me, with ballerina figures.

‘Emmy and I were very close but I didn’t tell her much about my background and she didn’t tell me much about hers.

'She came to the States to become a model or actress and said she met Ghislaine in New York. Ghislaine promised her a great lifestyle, like she’d promised me. She was given an apartment in the same New York building as me.’

Last week, The Mail on Sunday tracked Emmy down to a house in an exclusive Oxford street. When asked to comment on her involvement with Epstein and Maxwell, she said: ‘I don’t want to talk to you.’

Ghislaine also held ‘auditions’ for masseurs to work for Epstein on his private Caribbean island, Little Saint James.

The interviews would take place on the neighbouring US Virgin Island of St. Thomas, and candidates would be chosen on the basis of their appearance.

According to an American male masseur, who worked for Epstein from 1998 to 2001, giving him the strong, deep rub-downs the young women were unable to provide, Ghislaine also demanded regular massages.

Now 38, the therapist, who does not wish to be named, says: ‘Whenever they were on the island, they’d call up and ask when I could go over. It was great money, $100 an hour.

'I’ll never forget the first time I massaged Ghislaine. I walked into the room to set up the table and she was standing there stark naked. I was extremely embarrassed, but she was totally uninhibited.’

When he visited Epstein’s five-bedroom mansion, which boasts coral walls and stunning 360-degree ocean views, he says: ‘I’d regularly see up to a dozen naked young women lounging around. The
Ghislaine ‘put the puppet’s hand on Virginia’s breast, then Andrew put his hand on my breast’

house is open-plan, so you can see out on the patios and the pool deck.

‘There’d be classical music playing in the background to set a very relaxed ambience. If the women were ever introduced to me, it was as his “secretaries”.’

According to Virginia, Ghislaine was the undisputed leader of the girls in Epstein’s entourage. ‘She was funny. She was boisterous.

'I was scared of ever saying no to her. I was always compliant. I knew if I said no to anything, I would be on the street,’ she says.

She adds: ‘Ghislaine was a photographer and she took many of the nude pictures that were all over the houses, including the ones of me in a hammock that Bill Clinton and Andrew and all their visitors had to have seen.

‘One year, I couldn’t think what to give Jeffrey for his birthday and Ghislaine said: “Just give him a photograph of you.” I had a nice picture of myself, lying against a tree, fully clothed, but when

'I showed it to her, she said, “No, you can’t give him that.” She took me and laid me naked across a hammock and put a sheer piece of net across me and posed me with my legs open, a bit provocatively, and that was the picture she had me give Jeffrey.’

Another girl Ghislaine targeted for Epstein was Nadia Bjorlin, an actress who stars in the American soap opera Days Of Our Lives.

Now 30, she was just 13 when she attracted the tycoon’s attention. Her mother, Iranian-born Fary, spoke last week of the family’s disturbing experience. Nadia’s father, celebrated classical conductor Ulf Bjorlin had died just a year earlier, and Fary says she believes the mourning schoolgirl must have appeared an easy target.

‘She was at school at the famed Interlochen Music Centre in Michigan when she met Epstein,’ says Fary.

‘My daughter was a singer. She was a baby. She was a skinny little girl, not mature for her age. She was 13, but everyone thought she was nine or ten.

‘Epstein was a big donor and he heard about Nadia and that her father had died, so she was vulnerable, and he contacted her. He said, “Here’s my number.”

He kept saying: “Come – will you come?” He said he wanted to help mentor her. I wouldn’t let her meet him. What sort of a man approaches a young girl and asks to meet her?’

It was Ghislaine who managed to become friendly with Fary and Nadia. ‘I trusted Ghislaine, she was like a mother. She was always calling my house,’ says Fary.

‘Ghislaine didn’t want me to meet Epstein, but I did anyway, and asked what he wanted with Nadia. He said he wanted to help her singing career. He said, “I’d like to be like a godfather”. It felt creepy.

'I had a bad vibe about him, and said, “Stop!” I told him, “No thank you. She doesn’t need your help.” I kept Nadia away from him. She never met him alone. She never went anywhere with him.’

It was not until Epstein’s arrest that Fary realised the fate which could have befallen her daughter.

His disgrace began in March 2005 when the mother of a 14-year-old girl contacted Palm Beach police alleging she had been sexually molested.

When detectives quizzed the girl, she told them a friend had invited her to a rich man’s house to perform a massage.

At the house, she said she was paid $300 after stripping and massaging the man, whom she identified as Epstein, while he performed a sex act.

One of the young girls successfully recruited was Johanna Sjoberg, a church-going brunette, who was hired ostensibly as an occasional home help but then induced to perform demeaning sexual services.

Johanna was studying psychology at Atlantic College, Palm Beach in February 2001, when Ghislaine approached her on campus and offered her a job. For $20 an hour, the 21-year-old was to answer the phones and serve drinks at Epstein’s house.

In reality, she was expected to massage Epstein and, over time, the massages became increasingly sexual in nature.

Johanna met Prince Andrew in the library of Epstein’s New York townhouse in Easter 2001, when Virginia was also present.
Mystery: The yacht Maxwell was last seen alive on was named after his favourite daughter Ghislaine

‘Andrew was sitting there in a big leather armchair behind which there was a desk covered with photos of girls and young women including the one of me in a hammock,’ says Virginia.

‘I don’t think Andrew could have missed seeing it when he walked in.’

The Prince had been given a Spitting Image puppet of himself by Ghislaine, who was also present. Johanna was sitting on Andrew’s knee, and said Ghislaine made Virginia sit on his other knee.

Then, Johanna recalls, Ghislaine ‘put the puppet’s hand on Virginia’s breast, then Andrew put his hand on my breast’.

Virginia says she was mortified when she realised she had been summoned that day to entertain the Prince.

She added: ‘There were many years when I really liked these people. But now I feel angry and used.’

It was her second encounter with him. Earlier that spring, she had been introduced to the Prince at Ghislaine’s London house. Andrew came round and he, Ghislaine, Epstein and Virginia, had tea before going to a restaurant and then to Tramp nightclub, where Virginia danced with Andrew.

Later all four returned to Ghislaine’s house, and Epstein took a picture of Andrew with his arm around Virginia’s bare midriff. Later, she was left alone with Andrew.

Virginia met Andrew one final time on Epstein’s Caribbean island.

It was during a subsequent trip to the island that Epstein said he wanted her to have his child – which finally prompted Virginia to leave.

A spokesman for Ghislaine Maxwell said last night that she has never been contacted by any police force or other law enforcement agency in connection with any allegations made against Jeffery Epstein.

Teenage girl recruited by paedophile Jeffrey Epstein reveals how she twice met Bill Clinton

As a New Yorker from humble beginnings, Jeffrey Epstein played on his blue-collar credentials and enormous wealth to extend tentacles of influence throughout America’s liberal political elite.

During the outcry over the Epstein case, it emerged that another man with a notorious appetite for young women, Bill Clinton, travelled with Epstein to a number of destinations, including three times on the billionaire’s private aircraft.

On one occasion, Epstein flew the former President, Hollywood actor and staunch Democrat Kevin Spacey and another actor friend of Mr Clinton’s, Chris Tucker, to Africa, to ‘discuss AIDS policy’.

Epstein, who has donated more than £75,000 over the years to candidates from the Democratic Party, also flew with Mr Clinton in November 2003 to destinations including Russia, Oslo, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.

Yet Virginia Roberts stresses that she was never ‘lent out’ to Mr Clinton.

On one occasion, she adds, Epstein did invite two young brunettes to a dinner which he gave on his Caribbean island for Mr Clinton shortly after he left office. But, as far as she knows, the ex-President did not take the bait.

‘I’d have been about 17 at the time,’ she says. ‘I flew to the Caribbean with Jeffrey and then Ghislaine Maxwell went to pick up Bill in a huge black helicopter that Jeffrey had bought her.

‘She’d always wanted to fly and Jeffrey paid for her to take lessons, and I remember she was very excited because she got her licence around the first year we met.

'I used to get frightened flying with her but Bill had the Secret Service with him and I remember him talking about what a good job she did.

‘I only ever met Bill twice but Jeffrey had told me that they were good friends.

'I asked, “How come?” and he laughed and said, “He owes me some favours.” Maybe he was just joking but it constantly surprised me that people with as much to lose as Bill and [Prince] Andrew weren’t more careful.

‘Bill must have known about Jeffrey’s girls. There were three desks in the living area of the villa on the island.

'They were covered with pictures of Jeffrey shaking hands with famous people and photos of naked girls, including one of me that Jeffrey had at all his houses, lying in a hammock.

‘We all dined together that night. Jeffrey was at the head of the table. Bill was at his left. I sat across from him. Emmy Tayler, Ghislaine’s blonde British assistant, sat at my right.

‘Ghislaine was at Bill’s left and at the left of Ghislaine there were two olive-skinned brunettes who’d flown in with us from New York.

'I’d never met them before. I’d say they were no older than 17, very innocent-looking.

‘They weren’t there for me. They weren’t there for Jeffrey or Ghislaine because I was there to have sex with Jeffrey on the trip.

‘Maybe Jeffrey thought they would entertain Bill, but I saw no evidence that he was interested in them. He and Jeffrey and Ghislaine seemed to have a very good relationship. Bill was very funny.

'He made me laugh a few times. And he and Jeffrey and Ghislaine told blokey jokes and the brunettes listened politely and giggled.

‘After dinner I gave Jeffrey an erotic massage. I don’t remember seeing Bill again on the trip but I assume Ghislaine flew him back.’

According to prison records, when Epstein was serving his jail term, his visitors included a long-time – and highly controversial – Clinton acquaintance, Arnold Prosperi.

'In the final hours of the Clinton presidency, in January 2001, Prosperi was facing three years in prison after being convicted of tax fraud. Mr Clinton commuted his sentence to house arrest.

‘Clinton, Prosperi and Epstein make an odd threesome on the face of it,’ says a law enforcement source.

‘Was Prosperi visiting Epstein as some kind of intermediary for Bill?

'Maybe Bill wanted to know if Epstein knew anything that could embarrass him. Or did Bill commute Prosperi’s sentence as some kind of favour

for Epstein?’

Virginia disclosed that Mr Clinton’s vice-president Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, were also guests of Epstein on his island.

Last summer, the Gores abruptly announced that they were ending their supposedly fairytale marriage and, just weeks later, it emerged that Mr Gore – the famously sanctimonious global-warming disciple – had been accused of trying to force sex on a woman with whom he had booked a therapeutic massage at an Oregon hotel.

‘I had no clue that anything was up,’ Virginia says. ‘The Gores seemed like a beautiful couple when I met them. All I knew was that Mr Gore was a friend of Jeffrey’s and Ghislaine’s. Jeffrey didn’t ask me to give him a massage.

‘There might have been a couple of other girls there on that trip but I could never have imagined this guy would do anything wrong. I was planning to vote for him when I turned 18. I thought he was awesome.’

Virginia said that yet another American liberal icon, President Obama’s Middle East peace envoy Senator George Mitchell, frequently visited Epstein’s New York residence.

Mr Mitchell, aged 77 – who previously led America’s Northern Ireland peace initiative – ‘was very close to Jeffrey,’ Virginia recalled. ‘He is very clean-cut. You wouldn’t think of him being part of Jeffrey’s crew.’
Jeffrey Epstein
Prince Andrew

Scandal: U.S. authorities want to interview Jeffrey Epstein (left) and may wish to quiz his friend, Prince Andrew

Epstein’s contacts book contains a work and a home telephone number for the senator.

Another acquaintance was Israel defence secretary Ehud Barak, whose spokesman told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Mr Barak did attend several small functions in Mr Epstein’s home in New York that were usually attended by leading businessman, university presidents, Nobel Prize Laureates and prominent public figures.’

Epstein’s many Hollywood pals include Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons.

‘Jeffrey once had me give Matt a foot massage when he was flying on the jet with us,’ Virginia says.

‘He laughed and did drawings of Bart and Homer for my little brother and my dad.

‘I also met Naomi Campbell at a birthday party of hers on a yacht in the South of France. She is a friend of Ghislaine’s but she was a real bitch to me.

'She was very fake. She turned away from me when we were introduced by Ghislaine and Jeffrey.

‘Donald Trump was also a good friend of Jeffrey’s. He didn’t partake in sex with any of us but he flirted with me. He’d laugh and tell Jeffrey, “You’ve got the life.’’ ’

Palm Beach Police say Epstein seemed utterly unfazed by the allegations against him when they began their long and detailed investigation.

But he also took his defence very seriously indeed. Epstein engaged his friend, the Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz – whose celebrity clients have included Mike Tyson, Patty Hearst, Claus von Bulow and O.J. Simpson – to run his legal defence.

He also employed a firm of private investigators to investigate the backgrounds of the girls.

Detectives painstakingly built a case which they believed showed that Epstein systematically paid teenage girls to recruit other teenage girls to his sex ring.

However, as the investigation continued, they found that Epstein’s team had already spoken to key witnesses, suggesting that the financier would reward those who helped him.

In addition, Epstein’s defence team agreed to the unusual move of suggesting that the alleged victims sue Epstein in the civil courts. The result was a plea bargain in which Epstein admitted a single charge of soliciting an underage girl for prostitution – a deal which infuriated many police officers who worked on the case.

More than 20 of Epstein’s girls are said to have sued him for damages. At least 17 have settled out of court.

Mr Clinton, Mr Gore and Mr Mitchell were all contacted about their friendship with Epstein but declined to comment.

The Daily Mail, for all its faults, which are legion, eg Melanie Phillips, runs stories other newspapers in Britain wouldn't dare to touch.

I used to hate the Daily Mail for its reactionary politics, but they did the fairest piece on 911 inside job that I ever saw in the mainstream British press.

I don't know why this is. There is probably some element about the Mail's history which gives them more independence. I really haven't a clue.

The Daily Hate always seems to run the same Bi-Polar story in every issue

(sort of like...)
"Shame as Benefits scrounging Poles take over Oxford and laugh as British culture dies lingering death"
"Catholic Polish plumbers hard work and care creates biggest cultural renaissance in Oxford since 1540"
The thing that has surprised me about the investigations is that it was also front page of the Murdoch's News of the World and The Sun - and even The Telegraph!

That's because they're a newspaper, albeit an objectionably right-wing one. They live by getting stories, or alternatively often by making them up. They survive on the fact that they make more money from their readers than they spend on court settlements. The Telegraph and Grauniad are relatively good too, but the Telegraph is no the plaything of some mad billionaires and the Grauniad is run on handouts from the Scott Trust and its objectionable private equity partners, APAX, so it feels no need to be popular.

Ah yes, the Mail's history.

I was deeply underwhelmed by the rapidity (and vapidity) with which David Cameron closed ranks around "Air Miles" Andy. Personally, my opinion is that the chance of Andrew NOT having availed himself of underage Epstein / Maxwell - sourced err.. "poontang" = 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001%
But of course, I could be wrong.

Looks like the new guy didn't get the memo. Never, never say anything bad about the royal family.

No 10 in a spin over briefing against Prince

8 March 2011

David Cameron was forced to try to head off a rift with Buckingham Palace last night after his new spin-doctor appeared to question the Duke of York's future as a British trade envoy.

Downing Street sources – understood to be Craig Oliver, the Prime Minister's new director of communications – briefed the BBC that Prince Andrew's position might become "untenable" if further revelations about his links to the controversial American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein came to light.

Vince Cable, the Business Secretary, then threw fuel on the flames by saying that it was up to the Duke to judge whether he should stay in the role – and that "conversations" would be taking place with him on that subject.

Just a few hours later, however, Downing Street was in full retreat. The Prime Minister's official spokesman insisted that Mr Cameron had full confidence in the Duke and was "fully supportive" of him remaining in the post.

He also dismissed suggestions that Prince Andrew's role could be downgraded following the furore over his other business connections.

The prince today faces fresh questions over his links with Kazakhstan, whose President's son-in-law bought the Duke's former marital home for £3m over the asking price. It is reported that senior figures in the former Soviet republic hoped that the Royal envoy would help attract City investment to the country.

The Duke has been the UK's special representative for international trade and investment since 2001, travelling around the world and at home promoting Britain's business interests. There have been long-running complaints about the lavish nature of his official foreign trips.

Prince Andrew has faced criticism for entertaining the son-in-law of the ousted Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali at Buckingham Palace. He has also maintained links with Mr Epstein, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2008 for soliciting a minor for prostitution.

The controversy started on Sunday night when a political member of the Downing Street press office briefed reporters covering the Conservative spring conference that there would not be "many tears shed" if Prince Andrew was forced out of his role. After the story was given prominence in several newspapers, the BBC contacted Mr Oliver – who left the Corporation only a fortnight ago – for confirmation of Mr Cameron's position. According to sources in the BBC, Mr Oliver then attempted to dampen down the story. But, apparently unaware of the Downing Street convention not to comment on matters concerning the Royal Family, he suggested that the Duke might yet be forced out of his role.

The resulting story led the early-morning bulletins. Last night Buckingham Palace refused to say whether it had called Downing Street to complain.

Mr Cameron's official spokesman said: "The Prime Minister thinks he is doing an important job and is making a major contribution and he is supportive of him in that role. We are not reviewing that role in any way. He has made a very important contribution to UK trade through the role and continues to do so."

Speaking during a Cabinet away-day in Derby, the Chancellor, George Osborne, also gave the Duke his backing, telling reporters: "We have confidence in him doing the job and we think he's done a good job in recent years.

"He's promoted British exports. What we want is everyone promoting British exports at the minute and Prince Andrew has done that."

No 10's backing for Andrew was welcomed by Buckingham Palace, which for a number of days has being trying to stress that the Duke would continue working at a job he relishes. A Palace spokesman said: "The Duke of York remains committed to the role of special representative and we are pleased the Government recognises this."

Prince Andrew himself appeared to draw a line under the criticisms as he busied himself with public engagements during the day.

But a source said the Duke recognised that being pictured with Mr Epstein last December was "unwise" and that "you shouldn't expect to see a photo of the Duke of York with Epstein again".

However, Labour former Foreign Office minister Chris Bryant said it was time for him to go. "I think we should be dispensing with his services. I think the charge list now against him is so long that he is a bit of an embarrassment," Mr Bryant told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. "I just can't imagine the next time it is proposed that he goes to a foreign country what the ambassador would think."

Time waits for no man (not even the press chief)

David Cameron's new spin king Craig Oliver was so busy berating his old colleagues at the BBC over their reporting of the PM's views on Prince Andrew that he was late for his first away-day.

Mr Oliver had been due at No 10 in time to leave with Mr Cameron for a trip to Derby. But by the time he tried to get into Downing Street, it was in "lockdown" – so the PM drove straight past his crestfallen Director of Communications.

Mr Oliver went in the side door of No 10 before emerging from the front a few minutes later, a phone clamped to each ear, before hurrying onto Whitehall to hail a taxi.

No-one ever does, you noticed that too, huh?

Hell, and if you manage to sympathetically portray a member of the royal family, you're pretty much guaranteed an oscar!

Duke of York 'very worried about future as trade envoy'
The Duke of York is "very worried" about whether he can continue as Britain's trade envoy amid the controversy over his ties to a convicted paedophile, a friend has said.

Goga Ashkenazi, a Kazakh socialite, said that the Duke sent her a BlackBerry message over the weekend expressing his anguish about the coverage of his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.

He contacted her after the Sunday newspapers contained fresh details over his involvement with the American billionaire, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2008 for soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Last month a picture emerged of the Duke with his arm around Virginia Roberts. The image was taken while she was employed by Epstein as a masseuse but she alleges he sexually exploited her while a teenage minor.

The Government rallied round the Duke yesterday with David Cameron's official spokesman saying the Prime Minister was "fully supportive" of him staying on.

The comments were in contrast to earlier media reports which quoted an unnamed Whitehall source as saying there would not be "many tears shed" if Andrew quit.

Ms Ashkenazi, a long-time friend of the Duke's, revealed his state of mind in an interview with the Evening Standard.

She told the newspaper: "I told Andrew not to worry, that he'd done nothing wrong, and that it was being blown out of proportion. Of course, he knows it was unwise to fraternise with this Epstein character, and it was silly to be photographed with his arm around Epstein's masseuse (Virginia Roberts).

"But I know Andrew as a lovely, lovely man – kind-hearted, impeccably behaved and honourable – and I'm quite sure that at the time he had no idea that she was underage or anything more than a masseuse to Epstein."

Ms Ashkenazi also defended the Duke's controversial sale of his former home Sunninghill Park - a wedding present from the Queen - which went for £15 million in 2007, £3 million above the asking price.

The socialite introduced the royal to the buyer, her former partner Timur Kulibayev, the Kazakh president's son-in-law.

But the property is said to have remained empty and unused for a long period.

Asked by the paper if her former lover knew he paid over the odds, Ms Ashkenazi replied: "He had no idea."

She added: "Apparently Andrew had other offers to buy the house for the same amount. The way the deal happened was like 'I saw the house, I like it, how much is it? £15 million? OK, great. Done'."
