Name the worst of all living film-makers.

Postby JackRiddler » Sat Apr 16, 2011 1:28 am

.

All right, one more in this outburst, another game:

Name the worst of all living film-makers.

This is meant to get an answer in the form of a director, writer or producer. A name, not a joke or a studio or a channel or corporation or a trend or genre or other generality. Though feel free to advance any of those, if you are so moved. My question nevertheless is:

Who is the worst mother making movies to bludgeon the life out of you, bar none, and why?

Easy. Akiva Goldsman.

Upward failure of Bushian proportions. He wrote "Lost in Space" for godssake.

The man has his fingers in everything. Extremely influential. And he is utterly talentless.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0326040/

How does he do it? Bomb after bomb .......

Anyone else, had they written both Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, would have experienced a sudden crash into a brick wall, career-wise. But this guy? Just keeps going. Hell, most people's careers would have ended with Lost in Space.

And he wrote the absolute WORST piece of garbage EVER, the most amateurishly written script I've ever seen produced by a major studio, The DaVinci Code.

He is the personification of everything that is wrong with the film industry in Hollywood.

Initially, I put all my chips on the Qliphothic John Ford, Michael Bay. Now I'm wondering whether he's just another false face of the shambling horrors, Spielberg and Lucas.

Jerry Bruckheimer. That answer covers Michael Bay. In addition to that, he gives us a lot of military propaganda and big-budget brain dead crap, often starring Nicholas Cage. Lately he has moved into television police procedurals.

Agreed. I haven't watched a thing by him since Pulp and do not intend to, notwithstanding all the people who raved around me about Kill Bill and shit.

But Pulp Fiction does have some good lines that I still use today.
There is no me. There is no you. There is all. There is no you. There is no me. And that is all. A profound acceptance of an enormous pageantry. A haunting certainty that the unifying principle of this universe is love. -- Propagandhi

Jane Campion
Responsible for utterly over-rated lumpen self-consciously didactic plodding dreck.
By the time Holly Hunter went overboard in The Piano, I was hoping she would be eaten by a giant Cephalopoda on the way down. Yay!

The other one is a Brit director called Danny Dyer who produces utterly 'knowing' misogynistic bilge pretending to be "lads culture, innit"
This review of him is Most Excellent  from one of the UK's best film critics, Mark Kermode.

Might I add to this, whoever it is who made the Saw movies? I mean seriously, yes, they're really great for psychological terror (it works!), but they're just way the hell over the top, and what I call "gore porn." I swear, movies like that (splatter films) are just made to totally immunize a person's sensitivities... and this from a horror fan. They're just right up there with Faces of Death, and frankly? Faces of Death didn't get to me as badly as Saw does.

Ron Howard. I'm too old for Willow to have been a formative experience for me like it seems to be for a lot of people, but Ron Howard films always seem like they're made by a committee of robots.

Robert Zemeckis, if only for Forrest Gump, the most insulting, reactionary American film within living memory. Runner up: John Milius(sp?).
