Willow, I'm very glad you feel better :)

Thanks to you and to crikkett for welcomes. I arrived researching Dr.Greene and liked the community, your guys' insights and peoples-skills and not 'one of those' paranoid theories-only forums, so I decided to give it a shot.

When I am feeling like crap, it sometimes helps me feel better to remember that I have had a positive influence on lots of people [as a college instructor, I'm lucky enough to be provided with believable evidence of this from time to time]. I'm someone on whom you've had that influence.

Hi Bryan,
I am glad to know that and I do have regret around our more contentious exchanges.

My friend was an art history instructor. One positive aspect of her death process was that there was enough time and a call for a community event in her honor. As a result of this, before she passed, she was subjected to a veritable tidal wave of love and appreciation from past students and artists whom she'd mentored. There are very few people who are fortunate enough to see some of what their life has wrought.

No, no, no, no!!!!!!!!!

They're shutting it 9 months early. Who'd have guessed, I was one of the lucky ones who showed in the very last Artwalk @ 619 Western, now an historic event.

OMG, the sadness, the loss, it's incomprehensible. I can't even begin.

OK, some background: my neighborhood, Pioneer Square, was the first in the nation to devise and implement a monthly "Artwalk". http://firstthursdayseattle.com/ The 619 Western Building http://www.619western.com/ was an integral part of that process and currently houses over 100 artists, purportedly the largest concentration of studio spaces on the West Coast. It attracts hundreds, if not thousands of visitors every month during our First Thursday art-walk.

Regardless, the 619 Western building, directly across the street from the IRL Saloon, is slated for evacuation due to a waterfront highway improvement project initiated by WA state, largely in response to the Nisqually earthquake http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/Viaduct/. The original evacuation date was March 2012. The city recently moved that to October 1, 2011, and just today issued a notice that all First Thursday events before that date are hereby cancelled.

A friend of mine was teasing me as to why, when I was showing there last First Thursday, the guard on duty was an actual Seattle Police Officer and not some civilian security company guy. Guess he got his answer.

Most recently: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.196046930428656.48699.100000700528896

Tomorrow a film crew is coming over to do a follow-up interview of me about the history of the building. I'm so glad they were there two weeks ago filming. I'm so glad they recorded at least portions of the last night of 619.

I still can't believe it. Life will not be the same.

Heh heh heh, that's cute.

Here. Let me show you something Lisa. [Walks to a cooler marked

upward is behind it.]

It's not even 10 a.m. here in my hood - and I mean that word more and more literally each day - but I could use a shot or two.
I live between two growing campuses and slowly but surely the 'student ghetto' is closing in.
On top of that, the construction project that by all accounts was finished has just started up again.
And my neighbours are getting their roof done today.
Plus the street sweepers/washers are on the job, grinding and shushing at 2 mph.
Finally, there are two new dogs on this tiny street. That brings the total to 7, only two of which are quiet and well behaved. At night it is like 101 dalmatians in the scene where all the dogs pass messages to one another on the dog alert system.

I need out of here before I turn in to that crazy old person yelling at everyone to get off their lawns. A year ago when I took the big chance and quit my job to paint I didn't see this coming. I have the physical room but absolutely no peace.

*sigh*

Hi C_w,
I am glad to see you here.

I live downtown in a neighborhood dominated by social services, night clubs, and stadiums, and next door to a fire station, in the center of a public transport hub and over railroad tracks. The noise is extreme but constant. I can imagine that if you're used to quiet all the new and unpredictable noises would be maddening.

Have you considered getting a separate studio space outside your home? I've benefited immeasurably from working in a dedicated space and more importantly, in proximity to other artists. I've found the support and camaraderie are necessary to my art practice. I miss having a studio now and will have one again as soon as circumstances improve, or get worse I guess, then perhaps go bohemian again.

Just a thought. Otherwise, here's to a prolific painting day in spite of all! :sun:

thanks! glad you'll still have me :D

I know what you're saying - and you're totally right.. it's the fact that I'd gotten used to the quiet. I have lived in apartments over commercial spaces in the downtown and yes, it was much noisier there but somehow it was less bothersome. Probably *because* it was constant.. the traffic, the voices, the sirens... I used to find that soothing to tell the truth. Invigorating. And honestly maybe I would still feel that way because in the city it is expected & has a purpose. Not to mention that the trade off is good, too: all that food and those films and parades and demonstrations and activity are right at one's door step. Here.. the only thing at the doorstep is the newspaper.

LAME.

;)

I also hope you find a new studio space sooner than later. Maybe bring a ray of light into your dismal summer.

Thanks Crikkett.

Well, it is Friday and it's getting closer to cock-tail hour, both of which I should like to have this evening.
