If John Karr was actually a "baby" when his mom tried to incinerate him, it is likely he wouldn't have been old enough to understand what was going on, since she was unsuccessful in actually lighting the fire. So I would assume that someone kept telling him what happened. There still seems to be more to his story that remains untold. Too easy to put this off on a "mentaly ill mother" when she is no longer able to defend herself. How old was she, did you say, when she had her first kid? This case will be an aegis of blanket denial against organized RI culture. There's too much of it that's crept into the media.
