Never watched it, but I was a fan of the cheap though atmospheric Canadian rip off:

Johnny Depp is slated to portray Barnabas Collins in the Tim Burton film of the same name to screen in 2011, in other words, fuck yeah.

And may I add: Ooooo, hells yeah, oh, yeah, that's right.

I was a little boy when that show was on, and i somehow caught a bit of it at a friend's house and it scared the CRAP out of me. So much so that I couldn't sleep for nights. My mom then forbade me to watch a single frame of it from thereafter.

It's the first show that ever had that affect on me, so I have a fond place in my psyche for Dark Shadows.

They did a remake a few years back, a TV series, with some lovely brunette woman, Joanna Going I think?

I remember something about blood seeping from the walls which terrified me .... (from the original)

More character photos here.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles. Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Opens May 11.

Wow. I want to see that!

Yeah, I can see how that might be hard on fans of the original series.

It looks like it could be fun though. Thanks for posting it.

(My video vampire fix nowadays comes from True Blood, but this looks lighthearted-enough that it just might work.)

My better-half and I decided to try watching Dark Shadows on Netflix. He had seen several episodes of it when he was a kid and I had seen glimpses of several episodes of it when I was a kid.

So we watched the first episode.

Holy shit.

Maybe there's a way to raise Barnabas Collins from the grave in a serious manner, but I have a feeling the result would be a lot like 1997's remake of Lost in Space: a new coat of paint on top of a failed attempt... at something.

I definitely see why they went the humor route now: if you're going to make the audience laugh anyway, you may as well laugh with them.
