Thanks for the alert elfismiles.

The 'Nicks' are in the news on this subject.

Keep an eye on the skies for saucers during the Olympics Games, warns former MoD UFO expert
· UFO expert Nick Pope says massive summer events like the Olympics would be a prime time for an alien encounter
· Ministry of Defence 'has planned for the worst outcomes - attack and invasion'
· 'We should be prepared for even the most seemingly unfathomable'

One of the UK's top UFO experts has given his views on the likelihood of aliens suddenly appearing in our skies - and how the international community would respond.
Nick Pope, who has more than two decades under his belt at the Ministry of Defence, said mass summer events - like the Olympic Games in London - would be a prime time for crafts from otherworlds to present themselves to mankind.
He warned: 'With the summer of mass events we are all on high alert for terrorism. But we must also cast our eyes further afield and be prepared for even the most seemingly unfathomable.''
Pope's duties at the MoD included investigating reports of UFOs between 1991 and 1994, and says he began his research as a sceptic, before becoming convinced that the sightings raised important defence for national security and air safety issues.

He was particularly interested in cases where the witnesses were pilots, or where UFOs were tracked on radar, and said there were other believers among his former colleagues.
He said: 'It has been a widely held belief in Ministry of Defence circles that "aliens" have been able to detect us for decades via TV and radio broadcasts.
'What once seemed like science fiction is steadily being realised by central governing bodies as distinctly real.
'If aliens have studied our psychology, they may choose to appear in our skies on a significant date – the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games is one date being widely circulated by conspiracy groups.
'The atomic bombs detonated in the 1940s, and the rocket technology since developed would unquestionably have alerted nearby alien civilisations to our existence.
'On their arrival it is difficult to say what they would do: explore, help or destroy. Our resources make us quite a special threat.'

Hopefully, if aliens do come and introduce themselves to us, they come in a spirit of warmth, friendship and shared learning - but Pope said the government was also prepared for the worst scenarios.

He said: 'The government must - and has planned - for the worst-case scenario: alien attack and alien invasion.
'Space shuttles, lasers and directed-energy weapons are all committed via the Alien Invasion War Plan to defence against any alien ships in orbit.
'If UFOs came into our atmosphere, RAF jets such as the Eurofighter Typhoons, and missiles such as the Rapiers guarding the Olympic Games would be well equipped to enter the fray.
'And if the aliens landed, in an unprecedented move, I am in doubt that the entire Army would be join the fight.
'The TA and the Reserves would be called out and conscription potentially introduced. ' Speaking about the cultural impact of aliens since the first widely-reported cases in the 1940s, he said: 'It is interesting to note that we are all in some ways equipped to deal with alien invasion - games such as Resistance: Burning Skies on PlayStation Vita help acclimatise people to the reality of extraterrestrial life - and in particular that they might be hostile.
'It is a widely held belief that classified information about weapons and tactics useful in combatting alien occupation are embedded into such gameplay.
'The primary flaw is our lack of knowledge - we are limited in the extent of what we know about the alien species.'
Pope's role in the government was once described as 'working on the the X-Files of the UK', and he has since published Sunday Times top ten non-fiction bestsellers, such as Open Skies, Closed Minds.
His final role at the MoD, held until 2006, was Directorate of Defence Security, and since leaving he has given lectures and TV interviews about his views on the existence of UFOs.

He added: 'Aliens may possess weapons or advanced technology we’ve no idea of. Aliens may have invisibility, a death ray, teleportation, force fields and other things we can't even guess at.
'Beyond this, unity is key, but as history dictates, this is not so easy.
'The logical course is to unite the world against the alien threat, combining our military strength and fighting under the United Nations. But some countries might not fight.
'We saw this type of treachery and cowardice in the Second World War. Though some brave people joined the Resistance, much of France accepted Nazi occupation.
'The final and perhaps biggest flaw is preparation. With the summer of mass events we are all on high alert for terrorism. But we must also cast our eyes further afield and be prepared for even the most seemingly unfathomable.'

It's hard not to view Pope's remarks without a certain anticipation mixed with uneasiness.

Elsewhere it appears that the question in the thread title might be answered by the statement 'under seige' as Nick Redfern indicates at his blog:

http://mysteriousuniverse.org/2012/06/they-are-watching/

As someone who has previously dissed Nick Redfern (unfairly) over his high profile in this field, I'll happily defend his efforts and state that I for one am looking forward to buying and reading more of his work.

There are some really weird comments from Nick Pope in there that make me wonder if he knows what he's talking about, or if, like the televised run-up to the London Olympics, he is being used by the MoD as an advert for British arms technology.

He says Rapier missiles could be used against UFOs, but they're not very effective over long ranges, and are mainly intended for low-altitude threats. Truth is the UK currently has no decent long-range defensive missiles (just like it has no ready-to-go aircraft carriers, diesel submarines for inshore patrol, etc.) It has Trident though. Can't target it ourselves, or fire it ourselves, but we have it. Only costs £100 billion too. :partydance:

He says the good but slightly disappointing Typhoon Eurofighter could go head to head with a UFO invasion (which I suppose it would have to, if it came down to it) but the truth is that the Indian airforce already has more effective and manouverable jets than the Eurofighter. We're trying to sell Typhoons though, so it's good to get a mention of them in wherever possible I suppose.

Then he says a PlayStation game has raised the idea of a hostile alien invasion in people's minds - as if that hasn't been a staple of mainstream science fiction since literally forever.

'It is a widely held belief that classified information about weapons and tactics useful in combatting alien occupation are embedded into such gameplay.'

Is it?

I've never really trusted Nick Pope, and this isn't helping much.

I read that Nick Pope article.

It sure sounds like prepping or groundwork for something.

For those without the pc power to watch video,Nick Pope was using his position in ufology to promote a playstation game. His statement was nothing but an advert.Richard Dolan very politely rips him a new one.I'll never read or listen to another word out of Popes mouth.

Thanks for this OpLan.

I believe Stan Friedman was caught doing the same thing in promotions for APOLLO-18 and of course George Filer did the same earlier than all these examples when he promoted the 2001 ARG "MAJESTIC".

How he gets away with associating himself so closely with the MOD is beyond me.

Maybe also its a way to promote the Olympics. I guess a few more might tune in if they think there is a chance of live footage of an alien invasion.

on edit: I was reminded of Ed Dames and his RV instructional endeavor (PsiTech?) -- Ed also understood the marketing value of "ex-mil" credentials. I was also reminded of the fact that Ed Dames reminds me a great deal of Nick Pope, and both of them remind me that UFOlogy, even without milintel interference and gaming, was probably a doomed venture.

UFO Wales: New X-files shed light on 'alien' sightings
By George Herd BBC
Wales news

A spectral Luftwaffe World War II jet over Gower, questions about Anglesey's nuclear plant, and terrified Flintshire motorists.

These are just three of the cases uncovered in files released by the National Archives examining UFO sightings across Wales.

The papers span four decades, and include nearly 7,000 documents.

But one of the biggest Welsh UFO mysteries, the 'Dyfed Triangle', may have been an elaborate practical joke.

It is the latest in a growing number of documents released detailing the UK's obsession with claims of extra-terrestrial sightings that began to surge in post-war Britain.

The papers reveal that between 1996 and 2008, more than 20 detailed sightings were reported to the police and Ministry of Defence in Wales.

I've always been sceptical about these things, until tonight”

Eye witness to 1996 sighting
'Not a crank'

They include the case of a sighting near Rhossili Bay on the Gower peninsular in September, 2005, describing the UFO as appearing like a WWII Luftwaffe prototype jet.

"Suddenly we became aware of a bright object, travelling at very high speed, moving horizontally from west to east almost directly above our heads," recorded the un-named observer, in an explanation to the Ministry of Defence.

"The object was shaped like a pair of stubby swept-back wings, meeting at around 90 degrees. The wingtips were round, as was the forward joint of port and starboard wings.

"My cousin turned to me in surprise, and I exclaimed: 'What on earth was that thing we just saw?'.

In response, the MoD said it only investigated threats to UK airspace, and had no remit to examine 'aerial phenomena'.

Some nine years earlier, the files recount a sighting by a driver in Flintshire, in August, 1996.

A police record passed to defence officials stated: "The object was very large and bright. It had flames coming out of the rear and there was no noise coming from it at all. It was 20ft from the ground and moving very fast."

The report said the sighting was made towards Mold, and the records notes that the driver was "extremely shaken-up by the incident".

Significantly, two other sightings were made on the same day - one on Anglesey, and another not far ways from the first at Chirk.

"I've always been sceptical about these things, until tonight. I've never seen anything anything like it in my life before," said one witness.

Another incident found its way to the the House of Commons, after concerned residents near Wylfa nuclear power station on Anglesey contacted the then MP, now assembly member, Ieuan Wyn Jones.

He wrote to ministers about the alleged sightings, seeking reassurance.

However, officials were unable to address the mystery or confirm whether the so-called UFO was in fact a search-and-rescue operation from RAF Valley.

"It would have been highly unlikely that any of their helicopters would have been airborne," said officials.
Wales' 'Roswell incident'

Finally, the full records regarding the so-called 'Dyfed Triangle' have been released, after some of the papers were made public in 2010.

Image
[video] Broadhaven schoolchildren recount UFO sightings in 1970s to BBC Wales

It has widely been viewed as Wales' own 'Roswell incident' - sightings of both UFOs and aliens in an area stretching across parts of Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion in the 1970s.

One incident recalls a sighting by Rosa Granville who ran a hotel in Little Haven. She was woken late at night and saw what she described as a flying saucer ship, and then a silver alien shape.

Similar stories were told by schoolchildren at Broadhaven.

The MP at the time, Nicholas Edwards wrote: "I am being inundated at the present time with representations about UFOs said to have been seen in Pembrokeshire."

But the files reveal that officials who investigated the incident suspected pranksters.

"The Community Relations Officer added that there is general speculation in the neighbourhood that a practical joker may be at work," wrote staff at S4 - the government department that investigated sightings at the time.

"RAF Brawdy have had other enquiries about men in silver suits and it is perhaps not irrelevant that a local factory manufactures clothing of this type for the oil installation at Milford Haven."

Has this been posted here already? It's very good, very recent (2010), and well worth 90 minutes of anyone's time:

Uploaded by 69blackbox on 11 Jun 2011

The documentary "I Know What I Saw" change the way we see the universe. Director, James Fox assembled some of the most credible UFO witnesses from around the world to testify at The National Press Club in Washington D.C.. They were: Air Force Generals, US astronauts, military pilots, commercial pilots, government and FAA officials from seven countries. Governor Fife Symington from Arizona stated said, it: "will challenge your reality".

Their accounts reveal a secret U.S. operation with the aim to confiscate and hoard substantiating evidence from close encounters to the extent that even Presidents have failed to get straight answers. The documentary exposes reasons behind government secrecy from those involved at the highest level.

Official website : http://www.iknowwhatisawthemovie.com

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mia70txRLXc

The witnesses are numerous, serious, credible, often highly qualified (several airline pilots and two astronauts, for instance), and they come from all over the world. The cumulative effect of their testimony is just overwhelmingly convincing.

By contrast, the military, the spooks and the government are evasive at best and demonstrably mendacious at worst (and that very often). When they do condescend to offer "explanations", these are invariably an insult to the intelligence of a budgie. More importantly, they are a typically casual insult to the people, who clearly don't matter a damn.

That's one of the qualities of James Fox's film: it demonstrates that the UFO phenomenon is an eminently political issue.
