Director General of BBC Resigns in Growing Scandal

By JOHN F. BURNS and RAVI SOMAIYA Published: November 10, 2012

LONDON — The director general of the BBC resigned late Saturday in the wake of a growing scandal surrounding news reports about prominent public figures accused of pedophilia.

George Entwistle, who was appointed to head the network less than eight weeks ago, said in a statement that he had decided that “the honorable thing to do is to step down.”

His announcement followed a report on the BBC’s flagship Newsnight program that the BBC said “wrongly implicated” a former official of Britain’s ruling Conservative Party in sexually abusing a teenage boy.

Earlier Saturday, Mr. Entwistle said the report, broadcast on Nov. 2, reflected “unacceptable journalistic standards” and never should have been broadcast.

The broadcast seems to have only compounded the scandals plaguing the network since the revelation last month that a longtime BBC television host, Jimmy Savile, was suspected of having sexually abused perhaps hundreds of people.

Mr. Entwistle had recently appeared before Parliament to answer questions about a different Newsnight report, about the Savile case, that was never broadcast.

Late last year, Mr. Entwistle confirmed, the show had declined to air a report concerning accusations of a long history of child sexual abuse, some of it on BBC premises, against Mr. Savile, the host of wildly popular BBC programs from the 1970s to the 1990s. Mr. Savile died at 84 in 2011, and the BBC aired two glowing tribute documentaries in the following weeks.

an anecdotal observation of how the propaganda works

as this scandal unfolded, i have seen basically no coverage on the australian tv news, (after the brief initial Jimmy Savile is a pedo story)
last night, there was a long run on how McAlpine had been falsely accused and the dangers of the internet
the question is why, who, why, what, why, when, why and why again?

Yup, ..and the ABC is a clone of the BBC and no doubt has a similar culture...they look after their own..

....and with one bound he was free....sort of ...

…...another odd feature of the coverage is it seems to be taking place inside an amnesiac bubble where these allegations only existed in this universe in the last fortnight – some sort of denial of how many years they’ve been floating around in the ether – otherwise quite how did a single tv report that didn’t name anyone & gave no hints or direction as to their identity suddenly create a twitter storm around one particular person…..

possibly this is because Scallywag magazine – which I’ve not seen mentioned in a single one of the MSM reports - never got sued over their far more graphic coverage of this story back in the mid-90’s or all the other related material they printed that many people not a million miles from the Conservative party almost certainly want to let lie in obscurity …( ....although unlike the beeb would have had minimal financial resources to pay a hefty wodge of damages...)

they are important as they triangulated the care-home material from these "unreliable witnesses" into a broader context of information & sources from inside the Conservative Govt. of that time & surrounding hangers-on

this letter from Scallywag editor Simon Regan dated 2000 bears this out :

claims they had 12 witnesseses of whom 10 gave sworn affadavits – their archive of “paedo-files” then fell into the hands of Conservative party operatives in dubious circumstances never to be seen again

Regan specifically identifies Messhan as one of the most troubled victims even amongst his peers of “lousy witnesses" & subsequent events ( now being widely publicised ) seem to show a propensity towards the soliciting & acceptance of financial inducements

It also emerged at the trial that before he would give evidence to support the publications, he had insisted that Private Eye pay him £60,000 on the grounds it had previously published an article which had damaged him. Surprisingly, the magazine did agree to pay him £4,500.

The Waterhouse Report

By Simon Regan

20 February 2000

The fact that the Waterhouse report went as far as it did is highly commendable, and obviously long overdue. But the trouble with any investigation which tries to break through a 'cult of silence' is the lingering doubts that it will ever get down to the whole full truth of the matter. Waterhouse is probably merely the tip of the iceberg.

The report suggests there is 'no evidence' that Freemasonry had anything to do with the scandal. Yet there were two inadequate and inconclusive police inquiries, including one into a senior officer, by a force in North Wales riddled with freemasons.

There was a consistent lack of initiative on the part of the local Clwyd CC in the face of overwhelming evidence of consistent child abuse at Bryn Estyn, ostensibly because the council insurers advised against any action. This in itself insults democracy in a way that borders on the criminal. By a policy of non-action, both the police and the council became embroiled in a blatant cover-up.

Anyone who has even vaguely become acquainted with paedophilia knows very well that they will go to the ends of the earth to keep their activities absolutely secret. They are professional experts in covering their tracks.

In the early nineties, in the now defunct Scallywag magazine, which I founded, we interviewed in some depth twelve former inmates at Bryn Estyn who had all been involved in the Wrexham paedophile ring, which the tribunal acknowledges existed. Most of these interviews were extremely harrowing and disturbing, but were gently and sensitively conducted over pub lunches where the victim could relax. We subsequently persuaded ten of them to make sworn affidavits which we proposed to use as back up to half a dozen paedophile stories we later published.

Two of these young men, who had been 14-years-old at the time, swore they had been not only introduced to the paedophile ring operating in the Crest Hotel in Wrexham but had later been escorted on three or four occasions to an address in Pimlico where they were further abused.

We took them separately to Pimlico and asked them to point out the building where this had taken place. They were both positive in their identification. It turned out to be the private flat of a well known, and since highly discredited lobbyist who later went into obscurity in some disgrace because of his involvement with Mohammed al-Fayed and the 'cash for questions' scandal. At the time we ran a story entitled 'Boys for Questions' and named several prominent members of the then Thatcher government. These allegations went to the very top of the Tory party, yet there was a curious and almost ominous lack of writs.

The lobbyist was a notorious 'queen' who specialised in gay parties with a 'political mix' in the Pimlico area - most convenient to the Commons - and which included selected flats in Dolphin Square. The two young men were able to give us very graphic descriptions of just what went on, including acts of buggery, and alleged that they were only two of many from children's homes other than North Wales.

There was, to my certain knowledge, at least one resignation from the Conservative office in Smith Square once we had published our evidence and named names.

Subsequently, over a rent dispute which is still a matter of litigation, Dr. Julian Lewis, now Conservative MP for New Forest (East) but then deputy head of research at Conservative Central Office in Smith Square, managed to purchase the contents of our offices, which included all our files. It had been alleged that we owed rent, which we disputed, but under a court order the landlords were able to change the locks and seize our assets which included all our files, including those we had made on paedophiles. It was apparently quite legal, but it was most certainly a dirty trick.

All of a sudden very private information, some of it even privileged between ourselves and our lawyer during the John Major libel action, was being published in selected, pro-Conservative sections of the media.

Subsequently, during a court case initiated by Lewis, I was able in my defence to seek discovery of documents and asked to see the seized files. The paedophile papers were missing. This is a very great shame, because Sir Ronald Waterhouse certainly should have been aware of them.

I believe that the secrecy the Establishment wraps around itself easily equals that of the paedophiles. They really do look after each other and quite professionally cover their tracks.

The real trouble about exposing paedophiles is that former victims of child abuse make lousy witnesses. By the very nature of the abuse, when they are rudely shoved out into the wide world (one of the witnesses, Stephen Messham, for example, was released on his sixteenth birthday on Christmas day after two years of abuse, and had to sleep rough on the streets for four and a half months), they are often deeply psychologically disturbed.

Some of the extreme cases commit suicide, many more were sexually disorientated in the worst possible way. Some became gay prostitutes, others drug addicts, and in nearly every case, at some stage, they needed lengthy counselling. Marriages quickly disintegrated in psychological turmoil and a lot of former victims had real difficulties raising their own children. There are very few victims of child abuse who come out of it without deep scars.

It was all very well for us to take statements from former victims in the cosy atmosphere of a pub lunch, but put them up against an agile and eminent QC whose sole task is to discredit them, and they quickly crumble, even break down in tears. Many former victims now have criminal records of some kind, owing almost exclusively to the abuse itself, and the barrister will brutally exploit this as evidence that the witness is unreliable and tainted. Faced with the choice of a clearly neurotic young man who quickly falls down in the witness box, and a smooth, experienced, erudite and often highly respected culprit, juries tend to give the accused the benefit of the doubt.

I watched it in the now famous Court 13 at the High Court during the libel action between former Supt. Gordon Anglesey and Private Eye (and others) when, despite the fact that under cross examination, Anglesey had to admit that his evidence did not correspond with his own notebooks, the 'other side' subsequently tore the five main prosecution witnesses to pieces in a monumental act of judicial harassment. Like the whole story of child abuse in North Wales and elsewhere, it broke my heart.

The whole Steve Messham fiasco strikes me as a typically well organised foil by those who seek to conceal their identities and activities throughout the course of this current storm.

Whereafter of course it will be business as usual.

Not an easy nut to crack, given the well programmed fear and denial that has been installed in the psyche of the majority of us proles, when accompanied by the power they have established courtesy of our own trusting, complacency and ignorance, in tandem with their deception.

Penetration of such organised evil requires the breaking down of power structures whose careful construction probably spans millenia, at least if the documented activity of such abuse through the ages, amidst the supposedly higher echelons of our society is anything to go by.

For a reminder of the pervasive influence of this kind of power structure, we only have to read the first post in this thread. The "jobsworths" will do the rest until they better understand how this all works

Not that its their fault of course, since you can't remember what you don't know, or arent prepared to listen to.

Need to add a purely non-informational post, just to say how gutted I feel for Steve Messham, both for the abuse he suffered from the powerful since his childhood, and the abuse he will suffer again from the powerful now. The Daily Mail has declared open season on his character and integrity, the rest of the media will follow. This is utterly disgraceful. I don't expect that a guy from a care home who was seriously and viciously abused (not even Waterhouse denies this) from his early years through to his teens will have a spotless past in terms of his own behaviour.

But was no one looking after this guy at all, helping him, when this case looked set to resurface? No one in the media who looked to profit from his story in terms of ratings and sales was (or is) standing by him in any way? I know he has no support whatsoever from any professional people because if he did they would've stopped him from going on Twitter right at the start of all this.

A victim of his delusions: Astonishing story the BBC DIDN'T tell you about its troubled star witness

* He assaulted QC at inquiry and was branded 'unreliable witness'
* Triggered £400k libel payout after false sex abuse accusation
* Stood trial for £65k fraud at charity for victims of the scandal
* Even his lawyer says he may have invented stories

If you want to read the most disgusting and unforgiveable piece of journalism ever published, follow this link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... tness.html

There is so much that is wrong in it, starting with the headline (always the most damaging part of an article), that it makes my head ache. I am literally sickened by what is happening here, and then I think of how Messham himself, and the other victims, must be feeling...

You will get halfway through that lengthy Mail article, with all Messham's lifetime of crimes and misdemeanours itemised in detail for your perusal, before you find out that he was accquitted of the charity fraud he stood trial for. Accquitted. Which means he is not guilty of it. Just like, apparently, Lord McCalpine is not guilty of abusing Steve Messham... You will also find out that four separate boys accused the North Wales policeman who won the libel trial, not just Messham. But before you find out those facts you will have to read the headline and the bullet points, and the media's job will already have been done.

The media accept that it is wrong to accuse Lord McAlpine of child sex abuse, or even to name him after he has been accused (unlike, say, Freddie Starr, who was crucified by the media even before he was announced as an official suspect in the Savile cases) but it is perfectly okay, it is fine, it is acceptable to call Steve Messham a violent liar and a fraud in a headline article like the Daily Mail has just unleashed... because Steve Messham doesn't have the lawyers, does he? He doesn't have Max Clifford on his side. Hell, his lawyer is so shite that he goes out of his way to tell the media that his client is a liar in advance of any court case. FFS.

Sorry. I am raging. Have been for days now, over this, after somebody or other typed the activation code into David Aaronovitch.

It was always going to go this way, but Christ... really? Him again?

Anyone who has been following the North Wales cases closely over the years (I wasn't one of them. I was aware of it, of course, but it took the Bryn Alyn documentary I posted earlier to wake me up fully to what went on) will be familiar with the pattern of suspicious fires, arson attacks, and fire-related deaths that seem to accompany it.

Well... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-20287078

That is the last implied/insinuated connection I will make here. I want to do a megapost on why Steve Messham is not
a liar, all sourced from respectable mainstream media and backed up with sources connected to both the Jillings and Waterhouse inquiries. But it might take a while.

If you have watched the Bryn Alan documentary, then imagine this far worse scenario - the only man those children could go to with a medical complaint, including one brought on by physical or sexual abuse, was Dr. Peter Kedney, the best friend of John Allen, who was the owner of the home and the man who abused them most frequently. They would've had to confide (or soon learn not to confide) in an aggressive and intimidating monster like that - a guy who co-owned a yacht with Allen, was on his payroll, and seems about as interested in child welfare as he would be in the responsible management of public funds. He also describes his paedophile friend as "a saint."

Wombaticus Rex wrote:Also, wasn't the "witch hunt" angle exactly how Richard Webster white-washed Bryn Estyn?

Why yes, yes I think it was.

Indeed it was. And it is also the reason that the abuse in the Islington care homes was allowed to go on for so long (the authorities said they were afraid of provoking a homphobic backlash, much like Cameron - they even used the homphobic reaction in Northern Ireland after Kincora as an excuse), and it is also the reason that the predominately Asian child abuse gangs in Rotherham and Rochdale were allowed to operate for years with the knowledge of the police and social services (in those cases the authorities have admitted that they feared heightened racial tension would follow from arrests). So here we have clear and admitted examples of politics trumping child safety in the mind of the authorities. To risk a cliche, was nobody thinking of the children?

slimmouse wrote:My recent life experiences in writing that goddamn book have taught me to seriously temper my opiinions and check my facts, which has been one of the best lessons I've ever learned.

I was on your site the other night, Slim, it's very well put together, I watched a good vid about the Oklahoma bombings which I had never looked into in any real depth before. Was put off by the patriot/militia vibe surrounding most of those who I had seen advancing the case for conspiracy around Oklahoma. Afraid I can't buy your book though because I don't have a bank account - so I can't get a credit or debit card, which to be honest is a relief to me because I don't like debt or credit.

slimmouse wrote:All that said, this whole thing should be relatively easily linked to the Haute Garrenne stuff (and of course we both know what happened there)., even if from a largely "speculative" viewpoint given how all that panned out.

It's easily linked - yachting, huge concerted cover-ups where even top policeman are expendable, inquiries that go nowhere or are deliberately stymied, or framed in such a way that they cannot find the truth, Heath accused (by some people) in both, etc. - but if the last few days have shown us anything it's that serious evidence is required now, evidence that will stand up in court, or at least will stand up to journalistic scrutiny.

The thing that makes me angriest about how Messham is being treated is that it's as if the media expects him, as the victim, to adhere to journalistic and legal standards of evidence. All he knows is that he was abused by a large number of men, some of them wealthy and powerful, one of whom the police told him was Lord McAlpine. Now he's being called a fantasist for repeating what the cops - and at least one journalist, quite possibly Simon Regan or Angus Wilson from Scallywag - told him at the time. It's not fair.

Project Willow wrote:Cameron, "That is what the police are for."

Uh-huh. For making sure it all stays underground.

Exactly. Who destroyed the photographs that Steven Messham supplied to the inquiry (we know these photographs existed, because at least two people were convicted on that evidence alone). It wasn't Steve Messham who destroyed them. It was the police, under orders from Waterhouse. And who told Steve Messham that the McAlpine who had abused him was an aide to Margaret Thatcher rather than one of his cousins, the wealthy landowning McAlpine from just down the road? It was the police again.

That said, I think at least some of the police in North Wales tried their best to get justice for the boys. It is the judges that let everyone down, including of course Sir Ronald Waterhouse, who refused to consider or allow certain statements because he considered them "too sensitive" and "best forgotten".

Child sex abuse claims against a top Tory were “credible” but not investigated properly, a former government lawyer revealed yesterday.

Christopher Allen said the judge who headed an inquiry into the North Wales children’s homes scandal thought the shock accusations were “too sensitive” to be made public and “best forgotten”.

Mr Allen said the judge, Sir Ronald Waterhouse, reckoned a victim was exaggerating to increase his compensation.

Mr Allen, one of five lawyers on the inquiry in 1996, said: “I felt the allegations were credible.

"I would have loved to have seen him (the Tory) pursued because there has got to be something behind the allegations.”

In another blunder, the Tory accused of being a paedophile was said to be dead when the Waterhouse report was published in 2000 – but the unnamed Conservative aide is still alive today.http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/pa ... id-1424184

A short aside. David Steel was on Radio 4 yesterday, appearing on Any Questions, and stated clearly: "in all my years as an MP, I never came across a single allegation of child sexual abuse."

I know Lord Steel is old, but has he forgotten that he stood up in the House of Commons to defend the known Paedophile Information Exchange member, MI6 agent, and High Commissioner to Canada Sir Peter Hayman on the grounds that his name should not have been made public through Parliamentary Privillege?

Because, as Semper has posted, Lord Steel did exactly that:

Image

His memory must be about as good as that of John Jillings. Thankfully both The Independent, and the North Wales council worker Sian Griffiths, still seem to have full copies of the Jillings Report from that time, and in the case of Sian Griffiths there is much else besides.

I realise people are mostly following this on other forums now, and some of what I am posting is old already because of the pace of the story, but the Channel 4 news broadcast from Thursday November 8th ("The Past On Trial") must be watched if you are to understand what is happening here.

If you are in the UK, I would advise watching every section of it on this link, with the Hillsborough stuff being optional of course. The main thing is what the NW council worker Sian Griffiths has to say:

http://www.channel4.com/news/catch-up/d ... ref/081112

Slimmouse, not being cheeky, but there is mentions of the masons from both a victim and presenter.

The most important part of it all, hopefully accessible to furners:

I am disgusted that people are discussing the shitey BBC fiasco (not here, but everywhere else) after this well-researched and important report went out on Channel 4.

Btw, if anyone knows, was Gary Cooke, the paedophile who gave evidence to Waterhouse and implicated high-ups as attendees at his paedophile parties, any relation to Sidney Cooke?

Some extra info on the Sir Peter Hayman case, or non-case, from Hansard.

Hansard, as George Galloway memorably procalimed, is "the official Parliamentary record."

Previously posted here by Blanc, but bears, and needs, repeating: http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/writ ... r-hayman-1

Getting briefly back on-topic, Jimmy Savile was a serious gangster right enough. Now, you couldn't run a club in a city in the 50s without coming into contact with organised crime (just like you can't do so now) but Sir Jimmy was clearly a natural to this sphere:

What protected Savile, beside a nation's complicity, was a network of famous and powerful friends. But what's not come out yet is that Savile's everyday drinking companions were known gangsters and high-ranking policemen. By his own account he was close to some of the north's most nefarious underworld faces, not least members of Manchester's infamous Quality Street Gang, a close parallel to London's Krays.

An interesting article from a man who was always interested in the dark side of Savile, but never quite realised what the core of it was. The abuse of power taken to the extreme - paedophilia.

http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/comment/ar ... -interview

The Krays were clever enough not to expend money and blood in an attempt to take over Manchester or Newcastle for themselves in those days - instead they made lucrative deals with the established firms who were already controlling prostitution, gambling, and drugs (valium and speed back then, mostly) up in the Northron wastes. Which meant controlling the dance halls and clubs. Which meant dealing with Savile, with his 52 Mecca dancehalls.

It's quite painful to follow now bks, I can't keep track of it myself because the threads are developing so quick, as is the story. Bear in mind also that on these other forums the moderation policies are very different (especially on the Icke forum :shock2: ) . Not that I think you'd be easily offended, but this is the internet, and it has crazy people in abundance talking nonsense all over the shop, I accept no responsibility for the opinions of anyone else who happens to be on it. Bear in mind also that a lot of the posters on DS and Urban75 are not particularly informed on these subjects, and many are in full-throttle denial mode right now.

Here is a link to the main Digital Spy thread: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthre ... 7&page=146

DS is a showbiz forum, but they have accquitted themselves reasonably well after the Savile eruption. If anybody can find out gossip on stars, it is them.

That's a link to page 146 of the 3rd iteration of the thread. By tommorrow it'll be way over page 150.

I am not following it on the Icke forum myself, but it is worth linking because there is the ocassional nugget of good information: http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showthre ... 3&page=785

The other I would recommend is urban75, a socialist/anarchist general UK subculture forum, mostly full of crusty old hardmen from the wars against the NF and BNP, but of course with younger contributors too: http://www.urban75.net/forums/threads/h ... 59/page-48

Heh, and I said I wasn't following this closely... Wish I hadn't. i feel sick now. I have linked you to the last page of each of those threads, you might actually want to go backwards through them.

Posting binge. I know. But if anyone is wondering why i mentioned Max Clifford earlier, here is why:

And Semper, with your unhealthy and worrying interest in the great Caledonia ( :D ) this might interest you if you haven't seen it already.

Savile, who it turns out was also a long-time visitor at Carstairs (the Scottish version of Broadmoor) came up to Motherwell in 1977 to do a benefit gig for the families of Carstairs staff who had been killed during a breakout by the child rapist and murderer Robert Mone and his lover Thomas McCulloch.

The benefit gig Savile turned up to was by the Bay City Rollers. Their manager, Tam Paton, was dogged by allegations of sexual abuse throughout his life, and hung out with Jonathon King in London. Their drummer, Derek Longmuir, was convicted in 2000 for posessing child pornography. It seems endless. You know most of this, but just sayin'.
