NEWTOWN, Conn. – A shooter at a Connecticut elementary school that left 27 people dead, including 18 children, was identified as 20-year-old Ryan Lanza.

A law enforcement official in Washington said the Lanza, who was killed at the scene, had apparent ties to the school and that one of the guns was a .223-caliber rifle. The official also said that police were searching a location in New Jersey in connection with the shootings. Authorities say before the shooting he may have killed his own mother.

The killings happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City. The town is more than 90 percent white and five percent Latino, according to the U.S. Census.

The alleged shooter has been identified by NBC News as Ryan Lanza, 24, and he shot and killed his father in Hoboken, New Jersey.

WNBC says Lanza then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School where his mother was the kindergarten teacher. Lanza is said to have entered the front office at the school and opened fire, then walked to his mother's classroom and opened fire, killing her and other students.

Well. Some questions/observations:

1. Are there two Ryan Lanzas from Newton? What are the chances? And if there are two Ryan Lanzas connected to Newton, well, our sincere apologies because what the fuck.

2. If this is the Facebook page of alleged shooter Ryan Lanza, who's posting to it?

3. What if — and this is a looong shot — the shooter isn't actually named Ryan Lanza? (Unlikely given confirmation from federal officials.)

4. This is a classic example of the media confusion and clusterfuck that inevitably ensues when faced with truly horrific news (we're as guilty as the next). Everyone's desperate for answers, but the first answer isn't always the right answer.

3:23 p.m. UPDATE:

WASHINGTON (AP) - A law enforcement official says the suspect in the Connecticut school shootings is 24-year-old Ryan Lanza and that his younger brother is being held for questioning as a possible second shooter. The law enforcement official says the boys' mother, Nancy Lanza, works at the school as a teacher.

The official also said Ryan Lanza's girlfriend and another friend are missing in New Jersey.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the suspect is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation.

CNN is broadcasting a pic of someone else with same name. Just the usual anomalies I suppose. Another coincidence: Joe Lieberman, also of CT, gave his farewell address to the US senate on Wednesday, and today, on the same afternoon as the CT shooting, Avi Lieberman announced his forced resignation:

This ‘Ryan Lanza Facebook Profile Is The Connecticut Shooter’ Stuff Is Fucking Up Everything

After initial reports that police had named 24-year-old Ryan Lanza the suspect in this morning's Connecticut elementary school shooting that left nearly 30 dead, including at least 18 children, dozens of media accounts (including Gawker) shared the above photo — from the Facebook profile of a 24-year-old man named Ryan Lanza, who was born in Connecticut and lives in New Jersey — many of them describing it a picture of the shooter.

But according to screen shots of his profile taken by former classmates who say they're Lanza's Facebook friends, this Ryan Lanza is alive, well, emphatically not the shooter, and freaking out about the fact that his face is on cable news. (Update: Multiple outlets are now reporting that Adam Lanza, Ryan's brother, was the shooter.)
Andrew Fletcher, who seems to have gone to Quinnippiac with Lanza, tweeted the first screenshot:

He later tweeted that he'd unfriended Lanza " because I was getting a ton of friend requests." Cartoonist Matt Bors, also apparently a Facebook friend of Lanza's, shared another screen shot in which Lanza curses at CNN (CNN emailed after this post went up to make it clear that they never ran his photo; Fox News apparently did).

Police haven't officially announced the name of their suspect, but according to NBC three different law enforcement sources confirmed "Ryan Lanza" as the suspect. Which leaves us with a few, equally weird options: that police (or the media) have the wrong guy as a suspect; that there are two Ryan Lanzas, of the same age, splitting time between Connecticut and New Jersey; or that this is the right Ryan Lanza, and someone is perpetrating an elaborate, and very morbid, hoax. Until we figure out which one is right, let's stop sharing the guy's profile and ID'ing it as the killer.

Update: It seems as though the first option was the closest: multiple outlets are now reporting Ryan's brother Adam Lanza, 20, was the shooter, and that Ryan is in custody in Hoboken speaking with police.

This Ryan Lanza, by the way, isn't the only victim of social media speculation:

they credited as being provided by relatives of the the alleged shooter.

Its Avigdor Liberman (aka Yvette, not Avi), btw. Do I have thoughts about the strange recent synchro's with names, numbers ets ? I do, but no conclusions ...this board has better minds on that issue. Lieberman is stepping down coz he was charged at last (after decade of "investigations"), but I am not sure he is going out of the game. He landed with relatively minor charges, so dont know. I have to say, re this shooting, that its been on my mind this passing week, as there were accumulated smaller shootings all the time, and I was wondering if that's a crescendo effect of some sort. indeed it was.
My thoughts about "shootings" of this sort are all over this board, I believe about half are related to MK programs and the other half might be spontaneous as a result of economic gaps. Its really too bad, but the US is becoming less attractive to live in for ordinary folks who just seek good life.

I am not so engaged in the news from Israel, so I am not a good source now (if ever I was), i am kind of losing interest in the political scene there which is going to extremes I cannot contain or analyze anymore. I am following the news on internet (mainly Haaretz, which everyone else can also follow their english edition), and only one additional "hebrew only" website, which is kind of specialized on military/defense news and has a funny language (rude , basically). This website kind of sums it up, bluntly. Probably Bibi will be elected, probably he will embark on more wars, more brutal economic "growth" (for the rich), and probably more people will become religious/ That's my brief prophecy of the month .

I believe this is the worst non college school shooting, particularly of an elementary school in the US. I remember the 1988 Stockton school shooting which killed 5 and injured 20.
They're all bad but this is bad bad. Like a zombie I check msnbc news online several times a week, but I knew this morning it was bad when a giant red banner was across the screen.
It's still baffling why these events not only happen, but comes in waves usually lasting about two weeks...tho, with the late 90's, that specific school shooting wave lasted from October 2007(with the very occult Pearl Missisippi
massacre all the way to Columbine in 1999) This new wave of course started with the Portland mall shooting.
