Stubborn US drought could be costlier than hurricane Sandy
Less than 18 months after the US Army Corps of Engineers blasted gaps in a levee on the Mississippi River to cope with a record flood, it's getting ready to detonate explosives for the opposite reason – to clear rock outcroppings on the bottom of the drought-depleted waterway so cargo can keep moving.

"From one extreme to another in just the space of 12, 15, 16 months? It's just incredible," says Richard Heim, a drought specialist at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

Even in a year that saw hurricane Sandy, the drought could be the headline severe-weather event of 2012.

Initial estimates range from $60 billion to $100 billion, with a first official estimate from the US Department of Agriculture expected in February, says Steven Cain, a specialist with Purdue University's Agriculture Communications Service in West Lafayette, Ind. By some estimates, Sandy inflicted at least $75 billion in damage.

So far, hurricane Katrina in 2005 tops the costly-weather-event list at about $108 billion. Still, Mr. Cain says, the country faces the prospect of dealing with what are likely to be two of the three most expensive weather-related disasters on record – in the same year.

It is not proven science at this stage that severe weather events are linked to global warming. Yes the claim is being made, but so are the counter claims, so I think it best if this thread dealt with the essential facts underpinning the science.

However since the post above has been made, here is a response for balanced consideration.

Now we have all read stories in the msm about the increased frequency and the costliness of hurricane damage due to global warming, but is it a scientific fact?

Not according to the historical records, this paper published in the American Meteorological Society does not support that implication. Now while it's true the costs of severe weather events have, are, and will probably continue to go up, this is due to other factors the paper refers to...societal changes such as increasing wealth, increased infrastructures, structures, population, etc.

The official word on hurricanes is:

* Since 1878, about six to seven hurricanes have formed in the North Atlantic every year. Roughly two per year make landfall in the United States. What has Roger-Pielke-Jr done to cause you to not notice that the scientific paper published by Jessica Weinkle, Ryan Maue, and himself, which was clearly titled Historical Global Tropical Cyclone Landfalls, was truly about Global Tropical cyclones? Costliest weather disasters in the US - 2 out of 3 - this year.

With stagnant/shrinking GDP and ailing financial markets, where will insurers get the cash? IIRC in US crop insurance is another market failure/ govt provided, so maybe the drought portion wont be such a big hit on say, commercial real estate values, as insurers wont need to sell as many assets. Still, if i worked in insurance, i'd be retraining.

In 1979 FBI Supervisory Special Agent Dennis O. Williams moved across the country when he was promoted from the FBI’s Los Angeles Division to a supervisory position at FBI Headquarters. Soon after his arrival, Williams discovered that the mover had defrauded the FBI by billing for a higher weight of his household goods than actually existed. As Williams pursued the matter, he discovered a cover-up at FBI HQ; his attempts to expose this conspiracy resulted in his receiving threats and becoming the subject of retaliation. Though an investigation by the FBI Washington Field Office demonstrated that Williams was correct in his suspicions, the cover-ups continued for decades, eventually leading to a conspiracy to deceive the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding an inquiry into the involvement of Thomas J. Pickard.

Pickard was the acting director of the FBI when 9/11 occurred, despite Williams’ repeated warnings to the White House that Pickard did not have the integrity for such a position. The 9/11 Commission report reflects that the Phoenix Division of the FBI produced a memorandum dated July 10, 2001, advising FBI HQ that an inordinate number of supporters of Osama Bin Laden had attended civil aviation universities and colleges and would be in a position to conduct terror activity against civil aviation targets. Williams believes that Pickard’s testimony that no managers at FBI headquarters saw the Phoenix memo before September 11 constitutes a red flag indicating a conspiracy to defraud the 9/11 Commission.

November 2012 was the fifth-warmest November since records began in 1880, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in its monthly climate report. The agency calculated that the 10 warmest Novembers on record have all occurred within the past 12 years.

The last time global temperatures came in below the 20th-century average for the month of November was in 1976, and the last time any month came in below the average was February 1985. ..

When the ice melts, the Earth spews fire: Researchers discover a link between climate and volcanic eruptions

It has long been known that volcanic activity can cause short-term variations in climate. Now, researchers at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany), together with colleagues from Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) have found evidence that the reverse process also occurs: Climate affects volcanic activity. Their study is now online in the international journal Geology.

The basic evidence for the discovery came from the work of the Collaborative Research Centre "Fluids and Volatiles in Subduction Zones (SFB 574). For more than ten years the project has been extensively exploring volcanoes of Central America. "Among others pieces of evidence, we have observations of ash layers in the seabed and have reconstructed the history of volcanic eruptions for the past 460,000 years," says GEOMAR volcanologist Dr Steffen Kutterolf, who has been with SFB 574 since its founding. Particular patterns started to appear. "There were periods when we found significantly more large eruptions than in others" says Kutterolf, the lead author of the Geology article.

After comparing these patterns with the climate history, there was an amazing match. The periods of high volcanic activity followed fast, global temperature increases and associated rapid ice melting. To expand the scope of the discoveries, Dr Kutterolf and his colleagues studied other cores from the entire Pacific region. These cores had been collected as part of the International Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and its predecessor programmes. They record more than a million years of the Earth's history. "In fact, we found the same pattern from these cores as in Central America" says geophysicist Dr Marion Jegen from GEOMAR, who also participated in the recent study. ..

Together with colleagues at Harvard University, the geologists and geophysicists searched for a possible explanation. They found it with the help of geological computer models. "In times of global warming, the glaciers are melting on the continents relatively quickly. At the same time the sea level rises. The weight on the continents decreases, while the weight on the oceanic tectonic plates increases. Thus, the stress changes within in the earth to open more routes for ascending magma" says Dr Jegen.

The rate of global cooling at the end of the warm phases is much slower, so there are less dramatic stress changes during these times. "If you follow the natural climate cycles, we are currently at the end of a really warm phase. Therefore, things are volcanically quieter now. The impact from man-made warming is still unclear based on our current understanding" says Dr Kutterolf. The next step is to investigate shorter-term historical variations to better understand implications for the present day. ..
