Good call, Yesferatu;

My initia'wacky' thought was the same -- this 'experiment' being the point-source for a brand 'new' alien universe with it's own unique laws of physics, evolution of planetary life-systems with varieties of creatures and intelligent self-cognizant species, each with their brand of origin-mythology/God stories ...

ie., the never-ending/never-beginning wheel-circle of life, branching-off into self-sustaining, independent universes as the great wheel/cosmic dynamo turns.

VERY interesting concept, re: 'creating' a new universe in a laboratory.

When scientists say they 'believe' some experient on the frontiers of knowledge and technical ability is 'safe', especially one involving huge potential energies, effects, or consequences, I tend to see red cautionary flags -- reflecting on a history of close-calls and near-or-actual disasters, and evil purposes to which new scientific/technical discoveries or capabilities have been put (often at the service of closely-held Special Interests, natch).

I too was reminded of the very-secret (at the time)controversy in which some Manhatten Project scientists were VERY concerned that a fission test might set-off an uncontrolled runaway series of chain-reaction explosions as the atmosphere was consumed.

It's not too reassuring that the experiment continued despite a lack of absolute certain surety that some unforeseen flaw could not be ruled out. Until the first fission bomb was tested, we just couldn't KNOW a catastrophic end-of-the-world wouldn't happen.

Also, it's not like the Big Bang and Inflation Theory are absolutely tried-and-true concensus-beliefs; Some very smart scientists are critical of many aspects of them, suggesting gaps in our knowledge and a not-insignificant degree of uncertaintly. Much about fusion and fission is still not known, and there are some BIG problems with relevant nuclear systems technology.

I'm sure not a luddite, as I have high value and respect for the methods and understandings of science -- but I sure think we need to be extremely cautious when it comes to designing experiments involving immense forces/energies, and esp. with the very stuff-thingness of space and time.

Starman
