A Hasbara Guide for you

Postby Searcher08 » Fri Mar 07, 2014 8:54 am

First, a definition...

I tried Wiki - problem is, Wiki is the Happy Hunting Ground for this very activity. The Talk page is a war zone.
So I will just quote the opening paragraph.
Public diplomacy in Israel (also hasbara) (Hebrew: הַסְבָּרָה‎ hasbará, "explaining") refers to public relations efforts to disseminate abroad positive information about Israel.[1][2] The term is used by the Israeli government and its supporters to describe efforts to explain government policies and promote Israel in the face of negative press, and to counter what they see as delegitimisation of Israel around the world. Hasbara means "explanation", and is also a euphemism for propaganda.[3][4][5][6]

In terms of what is being done now, two of the most recent reports from within Israel

A 2010 report produced for the Israeli cabinet by the Reut Institute, and cited by the newspaper Haaretz, exemplifies the common Israeli view that hasbara efforts are needed to respond to what it describes as a diffuse "delegitimization network" of anti-Israel activists. As Haaretz put it, "The network's activists - 'delegitimizers' the report dubs them - are relatively marginal: young people, anarchists, migrants and radical political activists." The newspaper also cites the report as saying this network promotes pro-Palestinian activities in Europe as "trendy," and calls for it to be monitored by Israeli intelligence services, and for the cabinet to treat the network as a strategic threat. It concludes that Israel was not prepared to meet the threat posed by this diffuse network, and that a counter-effort must be more vigorously undertaken to respond to its activities.[33]

Hasbara advocate Neil Lazarus says that what he calls "low budget, grassroots Hasbara 2.0" has come of age, and commends web sites that keep track of what supporters see as anti-Israel media bias, and that promote e-mail campaigns on behalf of Israel. He observes that "Israel’s hasbara seems to be becoming more dynamic, as the Diaspora takes responsibility", and that, "Even day schools and MASA programs have been conscripted to the task."[34]

So these activities are not some bake-sale level of involvement - they are seen as strategic to Israel's interests.

In later posts, I will be exploring some of the leading hasbara organisations, the techniques they use and their funding / backers.

Please note that this is a controversial subject and I fully expect an immediate denunciation.
I am aiming to let the hasbara organisations describe their activities and methods in their own words, so the reader can make up their own mind.

Edited to add:
My aim is to make this concise, readable and informative, so will not be CopyPasta-ing vast long articles - my humble request is to do likewise. :thumbsup

Slad directed my attention to the Hasbara handbook, and I found it an interesting read, interesting in the sense that the techniques described can be (and very likely are) used for much wider, and more subtle, purposes than supporting Israel.

By 'more subtle' I mean purposes that don't really fit the 'professional troll' description, as I described in a nearby thread.

Sure the Israeli Government and allied zionists do run lots of propaganda but it's important to be clear that racist/fascist types do, too.

This is where the magician's hand comes in- obscuring the shady stuff over here, whilst pointing to the bad stuff over there...

Surely the Israeli government and 'racist/fascist' types are very similar? I can't really see where any useful differentiation was made above.

And then there's the freelance type I mentioned previously. which are also significant.

There was a description I came across of the difference between influencing and manipulating which is a useful frame to have.

Influencing is intentional (ie the person knows they are doing it) communication towards mutually agreed outcomes; manipulating is where one party is unaware that the other is directing them towards 'their' goals only.

Please keep the conversation focused on hasbara, which is the OP.

Let's start with Hasbara Fellowships
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hasbara_Fellowships

Hasbara Fellowships is an organization that brings students to Israel and trains them to be effective pro-Israel activists on college campuses.[1] Based in New York, it was started in 2001 by Aish HaTorah in conjunction with the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The organization claims to have trained nearly 2,000 students on over 220 North American campuses.[2]

Students in the program have the opportunity to meet high-level Israeli officials. A sample itinerary given by the organization includes meetings in Jerusalem with the foreign press advisor to the Prime Minister of Israel, the mayor of an Israeli city, a member of the Knesset, and the foreign minister of Israel.[3]

Activities

Activists trained by Hasbara Fellowships have been involved in several campus rallies. In 2002, Hasbara Fellowships organized a rally at the National Student Palestinian Conference at the University of Michigan.[5] In 2007, Hasbara Fellowships members at Brandeis University protested against former US President Jimmy Carter's book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.[6]

In May 2007, Hasbara Fellowships (co-sponsored by the Israeli Foreign Ministry) called for volunteers to counter a "dangerous trend" of Wikipedia entries portraying Israel in a "negative light". Interested readers were encouraged to consider "joining a team of Wikipedians to make sure Israel is presented fairly and accurately".[7][8]

In 2008, Hasbara Fellowships helped to organize "Islamic State Apartheid Week" at York University to counter the rival "Israeli Apartheid Week".[9]

In 2010, Hasbara Fellows created Israel Peace Week as a response to Israel Apartheid Week. In its first year, the program reached 28 campuses in the US and three in Australia.[10][11][12]

This is a very ignorant comment. Even though many zionists and neo-fascists pursue ethno-nationalist goals, are racists, etc., they generally represent diametrically opposed factions- the EDL and company not withstanding.

While I'm not going to get into anything with Searcher, given his recent comments intimating that another poster and I must be ADL agents because we have a critique of jewish banker theory, holocaust revisionism and related ideas, I think it's very important to point out that right wing zionists and proponents of racist/neo-fascist or otherwise reactionary ideas both point to real problems on the "other side", in order to obscure their own shortcomings.

So what activities does Hasbara Fellowships do?
Lots of interesting things
http://www.hasbarafellowships.org/resources/social-media-initiative

Social Media Initiative
Home » Resources » Social Media Initiative

While traditional campus Israel advocacy has focused “on the quad”, today’s University students are spending more and more time online. Social media has become a crucial tool to reach students uninformed and undecided about Israel.

Many pro-Israel groups today use Facebook or other social media tools to either:

Communicate internally amongst the pro-Israel group about events, meetings or other activities on campus.

Share information and have discussions about what’s happening in Israel.

While it is important to have this internal communication, social media has the potential to reach the huge number of “undecided” students on campus. Social media should be used as a tool to communicate a message about Israel to the general campus audience.

Hasbara Fellowships is offering pro-Israel students training and guidance in making their pro-Israel social media efforts more effective.

Hasbara Fellowships offers:

Strategic guidance in social media use including branding the pro-Israel group, goal setting, organizational structure and tools for measurement

Helping to develop consistent, effective messaging to use via social media

Workshops in best practices of specific social media tools including Facebook, Twitter and more;

Workshops focus on advanced methods assuming students already know how to use social media in basic manners

Grants for social media usage to boost reach and impact

Hasbara Fellowships can visit your campus to run these workshops, or they can be done remotely online.

Our newest social media initiative is being done in collaboration with Bomah.

Well, nationalism allows you to be opposed, ideologically or otherwise without there being a need for resolution.

In other words, this so-called opposition is not really an issue.

I was left wondering who or what 'bomah' is...

bomah = "Brand Of Milk And Honey"

which is a full-service Social Media and Branding consultancy.
bomah.org

About

BOMAH – The Brand of Milk & Honey positively re-brands Israel by identifying why Israel is important and demonstrating how to share personal stories through social media.

Our focus is to help program participants translate their personal Israel experiences into messages and inspiration for others. BOMAH focuses on the power of the individual, building relationships, and personal narratives. This program will empower you to take these concepts into the social media world.

We empower groups and college students to take the lead in local Jewish social media. It is our duty to help improve the atmosphere on campuses and in our communities regarding Israel. Program graduates will gain tools to add valuable, real-time content on the web including video, tweets, and blogs to communicate a cohesive message to the public.

The program is founded on the belief that Jewish college students are interested in building their own community. By giving them the resources, support, and training they need, Jewish student communities will flourish.

What is the strategy?
http://bomah.org/programs/the-bomah-strategy

The BOMAH Strategy

BOMAH is a social media based Israel advocacy initiative with the ultimate goal of re-brand Israel in a positive light. BOMAH trains activists how to put together engaging personal stories from Israel and share those stories through multiple social media platforms. The BOMAH Social Media Strategy will empower participants to take their experiences and maximize their impact through social media. The goal of the program is based upon the concept that the power of individual relationships and personal narratives fosters a personal and collective connection to Israel as well as strengthens a decision to be an active contributor to the Israel story.

At BOMAH, we share the full story. Through these stories we want to inspire a dialogue about Israel, Jewish identity, and Zionism. We want to understand and share our connection to the larger, nuanced and more sophisticated story of Israel. We encourage students to share their personal stories through social media and on campus.

This organisation provides strategic insight and consultancy to many 'hasbara' organisations - including the previously cited Hasbara Fellowship.

Worth spending some time on them and what their approach consists of.

This is out of touch with the reality on the ground. The right wing zionists are being used to pump up the case of those who focus on dubious ideas regarding Rothschild dominance, the (un)importance of the Nazi Holocaust and whatnot. Equally so, zionist hawks will use the existence of these forms of virulent anti-Semitism to justify more aggressive efforts towards ethnic cleansing and dominance in the region.

Following on from the bomah consultancy approach above here are some examples of this in action. First is the 'Branding Israel' Initiative.
http://bomah.org/programs/branding-israel

Branding Israel

The BOMAH initiative will foster a passion for Israel among the participants and offer the tools and strategies needed to deliver their personal stories. Through workshop seminars, online resources, interpersonal mentoring and field training in Israel, BOMAH activists will develop into renowned leaders in the mission to defend and support Israel in social media circles and on university campuses. Our activists shall develop their personal and collective interpretations, connections and resolve for participating in the story of Israel and their Jewish identities.

Passionate activists will learn how to use their personal stories from Israel to effectively engage and build common ground with seemingly unrelated circles.

BOMAH will provide tools and strategies for confidently engaging other people and comfortably sharing personal narratives in a clear and cohesive manner.

This initiative will develop these students’ leadership skills through mentoring, workshops, meetings, staff support, and proper resources, as well as giving them an outlet where they can create and set forth their vision for their Jewish communities.

That seems pretty circular to me; the Zionists are both the abused and abusers, sounds like a bigger issue is being hinted at which would be a thread in itself.

In other words, Searcher may get his wish and the thread returns to a focus on Hasbara
