.

Trump once again serves up softballs for comedy material and though the Oliver piece was funny (the rest of the same show might as well have been the CIA-WaPo Bash Russia Hour, which is how long it felt) I just don't think jokes are the right response to this kind of self-serving, ideologically slanted, post-truth confusionism. Jokes just play into it. You think he cares that he got it wrong? The fans like it when he fucks up and the libruls make fun of him, it is a reinforcement. Plenty of them (not on R.I., presumably) would see this thread title and think it was real, anyway. I saw an FB group with 20,000 members or something called "President Trumps Basket of Deplorable's," they like to own their own stupidity, it's hilarious. After all, "poorly educated - I love the poorly educated." Who cares what is correct, when all assertions are weaponized and derive value only as moves in a power game? This level of contempt for factuality demands keeping a well-honed outrage hot and ready. Jokes do not always foster resistance, they can also normalize.

In regards to IKEA I once put together a bed -- like a raised one where you could put a desk under it -- and while putting it together all I was doing was cursing and "threatening" to call a lawyer the entire time. I got evicted not because I wasn't paying my share, but all the room-mates scooted out leaving me with the job of trying to find some. Weirdo landlord freaked out. But complex IKEA shit fucking sucks. I wonder if the perfectly good bed is still there? It has been years. Also every time I would shop there with a girlfriend or two over the years wound up in an argument.

IKEA is sheer terror I tells ya! I hate that fucking place. But those spoof instructions are deffo funny.

Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt early Sunday mocked President Trump after Trump pointed to an incident “last night” in Sweden to defend his travel ban.

Mr. Trump was clearly struck by the interview, and he cited Sweden at a rally in Melbourne, Fla., on Saturday as he argued for stronger borders. “You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden,” he said. “Sweden! Who would believe this? Sweden. They took in large numbers. They’re having problems like they never thought possible.”

The Swedes were flabbergasted.
“We are used to seeing the president of the U.S. as one of the most well-informed persons in the world, also well aware of the importance of what he says,” Carl Bildt, a former prime minister of Sweden, said by email on Monday. “And then, suddenly, we see him engaging in misinformation and slander against a truly friendly country, obviously relying on sources of a quality that at best could be described as dubious.”
While aides sought to clarify that Mr. Trump’s remarks were about a rising tide of crime in general, rather than any particular event or attack, the president chose to escalate. In a Twitter post on Monday, he accused American journalists of glossing over a dark and dangerous situation in Sweden. “Give the public a break,” he wrote. “The FAKE NEWS media is trying to say that large scale immigration in Sweden is working out just beautifully. NOT!”

Sweden’s prime minister, Stefan Lofven, responded hours later at a news conference, noting that Sweden ranks highly on international comparisons of economic competitiveness and human development.

I agree. But with the state things are in, the implication was there. But I noticed that as well. Sweden definitely took note of the imprecise use of tone and inflection. Good enough for me. I cannot find anything in the "fake news" that I will commit to as a link here and I am sure one will come out.

As an aside, through years of watching Swedish hockey players, they have no accent when they speak English. Maybe a tad. But most definitely the Swedes got the gist as they are as we are following this cluster fuck. Do what you will, Nordic. It is not my place to tell you how or what to think. However, trump must be impeached or at least continually impeded until he dies of an aneurysm.

It’s a weird time to be in charge of Sweden’s Twitter account

After Trump alludes to non-existent incident in Sweden, a 22-year-old finds himself at the center of a Twitter storm
by Amar Toor@amartoo Feb 20, 2017, 3:01pm EST

When Max Karlsson found out that he was going to be in charge of Sweden’s official Twitter account this week, he was looking forward to sharing some of his photography, or riffing about music and technology — nothing too different from how hundreds of others have used the handle since Sweden opened it up to ordinary users in 2011.

“My thought was to speak about the interests and values that I have,” Karlsson, 22, said in a phone interview Monday evening. “And then Trump hit.”

Speaking at a campaign-like rally in Florida on Saturday, President Donald Trump once again claimed that European refugee policies have increased security risks, and he pointed to two countries as examples. “You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden,” the president said to his supporters. “Sweden, who would believe this?”

Not Sweden, apparently, because nothing serious actually happened on Friday — no terrorist attack, as Trump appeared to imply, and no real security scare. Trump later admitted that he was referring to a recent Fox News story about Sweden’s immigration policies, but that did little to quell the criticism — and ridicule — he has faced online.

On Twitter, former Prime Minister Carl Bildt wondered what Trump has been “smoking,” while other users posted more sarcastic takes — diagrams of an IKEA border wall, jokes about Eurovision, and Swedish Fish — under the hashtags #JeSuisIKEA and #lastnightinsweden. Some Trump supporters, meanwhile, claimed that there actually was an incident, and that the media was covering it up.

This wasn’t the environment Karlsson expected to face when he found out earlier this month that he had been selected to helm @Sweden. Since 2011, the country’s Twitter account has been managed by a different person every week, as part of an initiative called Curators of Sweden. The idea, according to the website, is to showcase the variety of experiences that people have had in Sweden, and to “create interest… for Sweden and everything the country has to offer.” Twitter users can be nominated for the position online, and the program is open to anyone living in Sweden or Swedes living abroad.

The account has been helmed by colorful and sometimes controversial personalities over the years, and some have used it to espouse political views or engage with trolls. But rarely has @Sweden received as much international attention as it did following Trump’s comments this week. Karlsson, who works as a paralegal in Stockholm, estimates that @Sweden’s follower count has increased by between 12,000 and 13,000 since Trump’s speech on Saturday.

“When Trump made that statement, I think the collective response over here was like: ‘he said what?’” Karlsson says.

Karlsson wasn’t at the helm of @Sweden when news of Trump’s comments first broke. That task fell to Emma Johansson, a school librarian, who on Sunday declaratively tweeted: “Nothing has happened here in Sweden,” adding that she had been “swamped with questions about Trump’s speech.”

A self-described “fire starter,” Karlsson spent some time addressing Trump’s comments after he took over the account Monday morning. In one “fact dump” thread, he linked to various statistics and news articles on Sweden’s declining unemployment rates and historically low murder rates, neither of which have significantly changed since the beginning of the refugee crisis. He opened his tenure at @Sweden by saying: “My name is @KarlssonMax and I like facts. This week, we’ll hopefully get down to what happened #lastnightinsweden.”

Karlsson says he’s faced some backlash from right-wing Twitter trolls, adding that they comprise about four out of every 10 replies he’s received from the @Sweden account. The Swedish Institute, which runs Curators of Sweden, added a code of conduct for the account’s followers last year, after curators reported a surge in racist and sexist abuse. As an extra precaution, the institute said that Twitter users who are blocked by one of @Sweden’s curators will remain blocked even after the account switches hands. (The organization previously unblocked all accounts before making the transition.)

“WE HAVE TO KNOW THE FACTS TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS IT PROPERLY.”
Karlsson says he went on a “mute spree” Monday, silencing between 20 and 30 users that posted threatening or hateful messages, though he says most responses to his tweets have been positive and encouraging. He’s also engaged with plenty of Trump supporters who seemed genuinely curious about whether the president’s portrayal of Sweden was accurate.

“A lot of Americans were asking ‘what the hell’s going on, can you give us clarity, can you help us out,’” Karlsson says. “And there was a lot of love, too.”

It’s unclear whether Trump’s imaginary terror attack will continue to dominate Karlsson’s Twitter mentions; “It all depends on what Trump says next,” he says. But he’s already prepared a series of other “fact dumps” for later this week, including links to interviews with refugees living in Sweden, and other statistics that debunk the idea that the country has become plagued with violence and crime since opening its borders to refugees. Sweden has received more than 270,000 applications for asylum since 2014, according to government figures cited by The New York Times, and it expects to receive between 25,000 and 45,000 applications this year. In 2015, the migration agency granted asylum to 77 percent of those who applied.

The effort is personal for Karlsson, as well. He says he was born and raised in a suburb outside Stockholm, “in those areas right wing media trolls are calling no-go zones, which is not accurate.” And although he acknowledges that Sweden is “facing challenges” with the refugee crisis, he says “we have to know the facts to be able to discuss it properly… that’s what I wanted to bring to this discussion.”

He doesn’t plan on keeping his @Sweden tenure too serious, though. By Monday afternoon he was tweeting about more anodyne things, such as his favorite video games and things to do in Stockholm. But he does feel lucky to share his perspective on Sweden at a moment when everyone is talking about it, surreal as it may be.

“I mean, it’s tragicomical that this is even happening, and that the leader of the free world is speaking this way about Sweden,” Karlsson says. “It’s like an episode of Seinfeld.”

Swedish rape stats indicate a massive wave of violence against Swedish women by newly arrived migrants.

However, screw them, just because talking about the issue is "Islamophobia".

Same mindset as let the muslim pedophile gangs rape hundreds of girls in Rotheram and not intervene, because it was not PC...

What President Trump gets wrong about immigrants and crime in Sweden

Saturday evening, President Trump baffled the world by referencing a sinister incident that occurred “last night in Sweden” during a speech. It turns out, though, that nothing had happened in Sweden on the date in question — no terrorist attack, no major crime, nothing.

On Sunday, the president took to Twitter to explain himself. Apparently, he had watched a segment on Fox News — the Friday episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight, specifically. In the segment, filmmaker Ami Horowitz alleged that there was “an absolute surge in gun violence and rape in Sweden” as a result of mass Muslim immigration:

Donald J. Trump ✔@realDonaldTrump
My statement as to what's happening in Sweden was in reference to a story that was broadcast on @FoxNews concerning immigrants & Sweden.

On Monday morning, Trump claimed that the media was manufacturing “fake news” to defend Swedish immigration against the charges leveled in the Fox News segment.

Donald J. Trump ✔@realDonaldTrump
Give the public a break - The FAKE NEWS media is trying to say that large scale immigration in Sweden is working out just beautifully. NOT!

Except it’s Fox News, and not the rest of the media, that’s manufacturing fake news in this case. A cursory look at the data shows there is no immigrant-driven crime wave in Sweden. There has been no “absolute surge” in rape. And Horowitz, the ultimate source of all this, is facing serious allegations of selectively editing footage of Swedish police officers to make it seem like they’re blaming crime on immigrants when they actually aren’t.

The American president is using the world’s largest megaphone to amplify a false panic about brown-skinned immigrants raping white women.

1) There is no immigrant crime wave in Sweden
In the past decade, there’s been a spike in immigration to Sweden. In 1990, 9.2 percent of Sweden’s population was foreign-born. That figure was 11.3 percent in 2000, and 15.4 percent in 2012.

Immigrant rates have grown even further in recent years, owing in large part to the global refugee crisis. In 2014, Sweden admitted more asylum seekers, per capita, than any other country on Earth. Many Swedish immigrants today hail from war-torn Muslim-majority countries like Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Some people assumed this would produce a major uptick in the rates of violent crime in Sweden. Historically, immigrants to Sweden do commit crimes at higher rates than the native-born, though children of immigrants commit crimes at basically the same rate as children of native-born Swedes (controlling for income).

However, there’s no evidence of a massive crime wave. Here is an official Swedish government tally of the rates of six different types of crime directed at persons — fraud, assault, threats, harassment, sexual violence, and mugging. (Homicide is excluded because the rate is tiny; in 2014, there were 87 murders in the entire country of roughly 10 million.)

Image
(Swedish Crime Survey)
As you can see, there is no significant uptick in any of the crime categories alongside the rise in immigration. The most recent official report available in English, covering 2015, is not incorporated into that chart — but it concludes that the rates of these crimes are at “approximately the same level as in 2005.” That’s a slight increase over the 2014 rate, but hardly evidence of a crime wave — let alone one committed by migrants or refugees.

Sweden does not publish official data on the race or ethnic identity of criminals, which is actually common among European countries. Anti-immigration publications like Breitbart have used this fact to accuse Swedish authorities of covering up the truth about immigrant crime.

It’s true that this lack of public data makes it hard to assess the precise impact of immigration on crime rates. It’s possible there’s a small one that doesn’t show up in the aggregate data.

But we can say, without a doubt, that the large numbers of immigrants entering Sweden do not appear to be affecting the overall crime rate in a major way, despite the large number of them entering the country. There is no Swedish crime wave.

2) There is no rape epidemic in Sweden
If you spend any time in the conservative media, particularly alt-right or anti-Islam sites, there’s a more specific narrative about Sweden than the one about crime in general. It’s about rape — specifically, that Muslim immigrants are raping Swedish women in unprecedented numbers.

Breitbart has published an enormous number of pieces in recent years on the alleged immigrant rape crisis in Sweden, focusing on cities like Malmö with large Muslim immigrant populations. Representative headlines include “Police warn of child rape epidemic in migrant-occupied Malmö” and “Migrants jailed after woman abducted at gun point, gang-raped in hookah bar basement.”

So to be fair to Trump, we need to look at rape rates specifically — to see if there’s any evidence that rape, specifically, has gone up as a result of immigration. So what do the official statistics say?

First, the rape rate in Sweden is baseline higher than in other European countries. This is mostly because of a change in Swedish law in 2005 that expanded the definition of rape (including having sex with someone while they’re sleeping) and started counting each instance of sexual violence as a separate attack. Klara Selin, a sociologist at Sweden’s National Council for Crime Prevention, explained what this means in a 2012 interview with the BBC:

So, for instance, when a woman comes to the police and she says my husband or my fiance raped me almost every day during the last year, the police have to record each of these events, which might be more than 300 events. In many other countries it would just be one record — one victim, one type of crime, one record.
This expanded definition, together with a growing feminist movement in the country aimed at holding perpetrators accountable, has led to an increase in reported rape after the law’s passage. But the underlying rate of attacks likely didn’t actually change much.

“The major explanation is partly that people go to the police more often, but also the fact that in 2005 there has been reform in the sex crime legislation, which made the legal definition of rape much wider than before,” Selin told the BBC.

So if there had been a huge surge in sexual assault, this would show up in the overall stats given the huge number of immigrants coming into the country and the relatively large number of Swedish women who report being abused. But that has not happened.

“What we’re hearing is a very, very extreme exaggeration based on a few isolated events, and the claim that it’s related to immigration is more or less not true at all,” Jerzy Sarnecki, a criminologist at Stockholm University, told the Globe and Mail’s Doug Saunders.

The publicly available data backs up Sarnecki. In 2014, there were 6,700 reported rapes. That figure declined to 5,920 in 2015 and then went back up to 6,560 in 2016 (according to preliminary Swedish government data).

So there’s been mass immigration in the past three years from Muslim-majority countries — but the number of reported rapes has remained steady and even declined slightly in 2015.

3) The way Trump got his information is very questionable

Accusations of a crime wave by dark-skinned migrants are, historically, deeply questionable. White people panicking about migrant criminality, particularly stemming from rape or drugs, is a common way that racial panic about immigrant manifests.

So when we’re dealing with accusations of rampant criminality by nonwhite immigrants, the burden of proof should be on the people making these accusations. Do they have good evidence that these immigrants are causing a massive crime wave?

The answer, judging by official statistics, is clearly no. This is supercharged in the case of Trump’s accusations. His source, Tucker Carlson’s guest Ami Horowitz, is in deep hot water over journalistic ethics.

Carlson’s segment begins with a clip from Horowitz’s most recent film, Stockholm Syndrome. In the clip, two Swedish police officers, Anders Göranzon and Jacob Ekström, sound what appear to be warnings about high levels of criminality by immigrants. But in fact, as the officers told the Swedish publication Dagens Nyheter, they were talking about crime in general, without any specific reference to crime by immigrants.

“We answered a different question. We don’t stand behind what he says. He is a madman,” Göranzon said on their behalf. “He has edited the answers. We were answering completely different questions in the interview.”

Horowitz denies this, telling the Guardian that “the officers are probably under a lot of pressure because of what they said.” He could be right; it’s hard to know who’s telling the truth here unless Horowitz releases the unedited footage.

But this controversy hammers home the bizarreness of Trump’s comments. The president of the United States said something clearly inaccurate, which turned out to be based on a Fox News segment filled with faulty references to statistics and a dubiously edited documentary clip.

This is one way the president of the United States gets his information today.

Carlson interrupts his guest (target) for 6 minutes, allowing no layout of an issue, and then declares that "we are out of time" (because of the immutable laws of time, I suppose). Whoever uploaded it to Youtube helpfully added the title, "Witch Defends Sweden Rapefugees and Squirms..." Just the facts, right?
