Passivity, once induced into an animal, is sustained rather like inertia.
Pavlov said this in the book, 'Lectures on Conditioned Reflexes,' which was first published in English in 1928.

There is a short two-page chapter called 'Hypnosis in Animals' where Pavlov describes dominating an animal and noticing that its behavior ever after remains passive or obedient.

And here's Newton's First Law of Physics-
"Objects at rest remain at rest unless acted on by a net force."

Translation:
A public will keep watching TV unless acted on by an INTERNET FORCE.

So be a net force.

I wish I had a picture of a huge sign overlooking a new condo complex going up in Vancouver's Westside. The sign says, "Live. Work. Shop." - I thought of "They Live" the moment I saw it.

On a bit of a tangent - does anybody know what's up with John Carpenter's film school chum/ "Dark Star" co-writer Dan O Bannon? He allegedly contributed to the Kids section of the Eberle's notorious "Finger" magazine in the 70s. He's had a lot of success; notably the script for "Alien". He ran with the USC film guys, and worked on "Star Wars". Adapted Colin Wilson's "Space Vampires" for the movie "Lifeforce". Wrote "Dead and Buried", about a small town full of undead killers (they make snuff movies). Directed "Return of the Living Dead" but is a lot quieter these days.

Wow, didn't know that about Dan O'Bannon.

This is one of his alleged contributions to "Finger," though in the few minutes I've been looking I haven't found anything that backs that up. Did see a deleted thread entitled "Danny the Pedophile?" on his IMDB page, but all the content had been removed.

I've only ever seen the allegation on the internet, though the piece you link to - I believe - is not actually by O'Bannon. As I understand it, he contributed illustrations.

Sorry if I'm not adhering to the point of this thread, but the synchronicities for me have been interesting. My friend literally just walked off the set of John Carpenter's second contribution to the Masters of Horror series, where he interviewed JC, and we've been feverishly discussing O'Bannon for the last couple of days, and spinning all manner of probably insane theories about him. To cut a long story very short, we decided that Carpenter is one of the good guys, if you will, and "They Live", which came from a period when Carpenter seemed to walk away from the big time and return to smaller pictures, might have been an attemp to deliver something more than just good pulp. Maybe he could have capitalized on all the promise he showed in the 70s - maybe he could have been a Spielberg - but maybe he didn't want to serve somebody to get there. Maybe he didn't like what he saw. O Bannon prospered, meanwhile. Also - I think it was Havanagila that recently mentioned the psy-op qualities of the movie "Alien", which also got me thinking about the mysterious Mr O Bannon, but I can't find the thread - sorry.

re: dismantling the middle class

Postby friend catcher » Sun Jun 04, 2006 7:17 am

A phrase in that clip of They live...

A difference in terminology between Yurp and the US is that 'middle class' carries a negative conotation for yurpeens or at least the UK branch, whilst in N.America its usually a positive thing. For a politician, here, to champion the middle class, explicitly, is rare as they are by definition comfortable whilst in the US it seems to be a position that is in need of constant support and always under threat.

In fact, here, middle class is often used as a code for soporiphic, uninspiring and culturally dull. Not sure how this came about but all politicians have to pay lip service to the idea of respecting working class values whilst raising living standards, simultaneously avoiding the notion of redifining their class.

Edited by: friend catcher at: 6/4/06 5:20 am
