Quite a scenario.

www.huffingtonpost.com/to...23213.html

Nothing we haven't discussed, but to see it in such a mainstream blog was a shock.

I was sort of surprised too when the Air America executive had a post up on Huffington saying that the private ol' boys networks probably did 9-11.

Maybe some lefty blogs are actually starting to take seriously their self-righteous proclamations about "countering dominant memes." They have all been so afraid of being called a conspiracy theorist, they won't touch election theft or 9/11 with a ten foot pole. A couple of posts does not a sea change make, but this looks hopeful.

Mark Crispen Miller has an incendiary post up at HuffPo about election theft, and he puts it all on the shoulders of the Dominionists. WOW! Go read it, if you haven't.

Some Might Call it Treason.

Miller's speech on C-Span at the Univ. of Mass I think (which can be heard on Guns and Butter archives) talks about how scared a lot of progressive writers are and how they're always looking to exercise their "moderate chops."

There's a big debate underneath the public discussion in progressive circles about what to do with election fraud and 9-11 type of system failure issues right now. You not only have the fear that progressives have of being targeted publicly as conspiracy theorists, denied access to respectable publications, etc., but you have the so-called strategic concerns of many that think revealing 9-11 or election fraud issues are too hot and the system might not be able to handle them. "For the good of the country" type arguments essentially, or "it's unchartered territory, you don't know what might happen."

Most of the mainstream liberal bloggers have agreed to pretty much avoid those issues because they see them as discrediting to their chances of restoring Democrats and hurting their ascendancy as the new mandarins of political commentary. The other factor is a lot of these popular bloggers are probably receiving some sort of financial assistance from Soros funded liberal think tanks and foundations, and don't want to push the limits of acceptable commentary. You can almost hear them saying among themselves "if you think we get shit from little Debbie or the wingnuts now, think how much of a shitstorm we'll have if we touch those issues." (One other thing I think is going on is that they're also being played by Larry Johnson, Joe Wilson, and Robert Baer types.) Air America seems to be an exception, as they have at least one executive and several radio show hosts who have publicly said they think 9-11 was an inside job.

Edited by: NewKid at: 6/17/06 11:17 pm

You nail it, NewKid.

A person might get flamed, banned, or deleted for making too much of a fuss about these things. I personally witnessed the host of one prominent blog barge in with an uzi, calling people asshole, libellous, mean spirited, smug bitch,... I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, this was in response to the general despondency of some commenters over the so-called exoneration of Rove the other day. In other words, keep on the happy face, rah rah rah Go Fitz, or you will be assassinated here on the blog. It was horrible. Now, it seems obvious to me, where before it didn't, that the regulars over there are actually afraid to veer even slightly from the cw. I've noticed some haven't been back since. Way to build a movement.

Yeah, Kos is really awful about that, but it's a widespread thing. The divide between the bloggers and their commenters is quite interesting. There's a real thirst to talk about all these issues among regular people who don't make their living analyzing this stuff and just want to know what's going on.

You always have to remember as well how incestuous and highschoolish Washington is. The groupthink is unbelievable and the liberal bloggers certainly aren't immnune from it. They see themselves as having bitten off alot already and a bunch of them don't want to have to fight 9-11 battles or election fraud stuff.

What's interesting to note is the difference between liberal bloggers who just ignore these issues vs. the ones who actively pooh pooh discussion of those issues. I remember when Sheen came out and the commenters were all wanting to talk about it, and some places were scrubbing, and FDL et al were just totally silent about it and spent all their time trying to go after that little shit RedState kid at the Washington Post online.

In some ways, the bloggers are too close to the daily ins and outs and the pie throwing with National Review and Jeff Goldstein to take a step back and look at what their role really is.

Edited by: NewKid at: 6/17/06 11:41 pm

The dynamics of the whole Yearly Kos reaction are fascinating too. The Ana Marie Cox bash fest especially.

Soros is a rat fink. Robert Parry and others have been begging him for years to invest in progressive media to no avail. Imagine having the equivalent of Fox News touting ideas and people like election theft and Mark Crispen Miller?
