It's in Putin's best interest to wait for Western economies to collapse before going in, if boots on the ground is actually the plan here. Our markets are crashing, inflation is rising, and the energy supply is dwindling.
The West needs Putin to invade Ukraine ASAP so they can bamboozle people with supra-nationalist fervour during the transition into post-pandemic austerity. Russia isn't on the clock here. Hence why the US is begging for war through its media.
I'd assume Russia probably wants control of everything east of the Dnieper River. That would give them clearly defined borders either side a body of water that more or less cuts in a straight line from north to south Ukraine, but most importantly its mouth opens up into the ocean west of Crimea.
