Chillin' posted some fine reggae clips in the video only thread today which inspired me to re-read this thread.

Jamaica is such a tiny country, with so many horrendous problems, yet it has provided the rest of the world with so much joy and inspiration.

How did they do it?

African slaves, Irish Catholic nuns, Chinese merchants, British oppression and primitive electronics!

it takes all kinds....

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

A radio programme on this very subject:

The Nun Who Nurtured Reggae

Saturday 24 November 2007 10:30-11:00 (Radio 4 FM)

Jonathon Charles tells the story of Sister Mary Ignatius Davies, who ran the music programme at a school for wayward boys in Jamaica for 64 years until her death in 2003. She is credited with nurturing the talents of many of the key players in Jamaican reggae when the industry took off in the 1960s and 70s.

Listen Again here (starts at 01:54)
(Not sure if this is available outside the UK)

. is it a wise man, who knows that he is not wise
. it's good to have cynicism but not be cynical
. the more truth you live with, in your life, the stronger you are
. intelligence is merely an attitude to knowledge and learning
