"Isms" on the Board

Someone please explain this to me, why is it ok for him to write that in a post on this board but anyone who even hints that they might not understand the systemic causal factors of black on black crime is pilloried, or if anyone's post on the global elite contains the word Jewish they get banned?

I really don't understand.

The board seems to have come to a consensus on antisemitism and racism, yet the idea that western civilization is a patriarchy is still up for debate? I really was unaware of that.

When I read statements like that, it's painful, it actually hurts. It's not just having my reality denied but having it turned on its head, that all abuses, physical and psychological, I've had to overcome because I am female not only don't exist but actually are my own doing. To me it seems like it would be very similar to having to hang out with racists and be heaped with their scorn on a constant basis.

Not too long ago, C2W went on with Morgan and others in a multi-page thread about this very issue.
http://www.rigorousintuition.ca/board/v ... highlight=

I had other things to do and couldn't take the time, but now I can express that I am unequivocal in my position. If the board decides that this perception of women as historically equal in power or more powerful than men, that feminism was groundless, that the problem with no name never existed, is a legitimate point of view, then so be it. A lack of consensus, that allows for the random posting of misogynist sentiments, however, is equally intolerable to me. If this scenario continues, I will consider the board a venue hostile to women.

Some people here may have somewhat of a consensus about racism and anti-Semitism but just like the debate about "legal torture" in the United States, it's all about how you interpret, and enforce, the rules.

That said, I will point out that there is already a posting guideline which states:

"Posts advocating violence, or espousing hatred of a people based upon race, religion, gender or sexuality, are not permitted."

hey there, glad you brought this up.
of course this venue is hostile to women.
but after awhile you begin to realize this place is hostile to everyone and everything. many equal opportunity cynics known for cordial but distant and decidedly unfriendly attitudes. this is essentially a boyz clubhouse and anyone new or clearly female can be prepared to be ignored at best unless they know the secret passwords. no grrls allowed. unless they can think like boys who believe in nothing. and have all day to write endless posts on endless threads because they live in basements and have shirts with pocket protectors for their slide rules. ha just kidding. and they have no sense of humor. just like the women's movement. i've been in and out of here for a long time, and i just love coming in, making some snide remark, and going back out again. everyone always ignores me. it's fun. they're nice. i love them. if you want to see a site friendly to women, go to jezebel.com where all the smart, witty and cool girls hang out. this place, not so much. xoxo

On teh internet, no one knows you have tits.

Take me, for example. By my user name, who the hell can tell who or what I am? Black, white, gay, straight, Canadian, Irish, Japanese, male, female, or what?

All you can tell is that I'm a badass. 8)

And anyone who uses the phrase "The feminists get their funding" is clearly a nutter. (Ah yes, "the feminists" are just rolling in "funding.")

Its the lesbian conspiracy!

Or was it the gay conspiracy?

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 7526469743
This is a movie about those who risk life, and partners, to guarantee living in a wonderful and free universe. This is a movie about the Gayniggers From Outer Space. The Gayniggers come from the planet Anus, in the 8th Sun System, far far away from here. They are much, much more intelligent than any other creature in the Universe. The most fascinating thing about them is that they, with the help of their super intelligence, and their highly developed telepathic system, Braintapping, will be able to create a world, a society, a perfect world to live in without the presence of women. The film stars the critically acclaimed actor Matthew Frew ([REC]) who is the gayest nigger of all time.
Thats all I gotta say, and PC to boot.

kristinerosemary, thanks for the jezebel.com mention, I'll have to check it out.

PW, I am sorry to hear how much RI gets you down at times. To be honest, it gets me down from time to time as well. I think kristinerosemary has a good point that it can often be hostile to all sorts of 'isms', or at least how any particular 'ism' is defined by one personally.

So, I am sure it might sound odd coming from someone who starts a thread called, "V is for Vagina....", but I don't feel threatened by Feminism at all. I welcome more of it here at RI.

Many years ago at UMass I knew a woman named Miriam who used to go into newstands and just rip up their copies of Penthouse and Hustler right in front of the owners as a protest.

So, I was confused when I went over to her apartment one time and saw that she had images of naked women on one of the walls. I asked her about this in light of her newstand protest and she said, 'but these images were taken by women I know, and I know they were taken with other women in mind' (I am paraphrasing here).

To be honest, I really didn't get it at all. But we had some cool discussions, and talked about women photographers in the mainstream Porn biz like Bunny Yeager and Suze Randall and whether or not any of their work was acceptable to her.

So, i am sure I still have a lot to learn, but I feel like I have gained some insight over the years. Like when Howard Stern says, 'I love lesbians.', he means, 'I love women who conform to what my idea of a lesbian should be.'

I get that now.

So, Project Willow, all I can say to you is: if you feel like this discussion board is trying to get you to conform to some standard you are not comfortable with, then that is a drag.

I don't blame you for saying it's not worth the energy to continue to participate if you see the returns continue to diminish.

I took a break from here a while back and it was refreshing. But even upon returning, i don't really feel like I participate in the same way I did before. But that is my own deal. I tend to let images convey how I feel about a topic. They say 'a picture says a thousand words', but I have to accept that those thousand words get formulated by the viewer not by me.

I could post a Playboy centerfold because the way the woman is smiling reminds me of my Mom, but unless I take the time to convey that, the viewer can come away from it thinking, 'IanEye is a jerk.', and not even bother with the other 996 words.

Also, sorry about any grammatical errors in the above thoughts. I am trying to get back to at least the level of writing skill I had in college.

That's right as rain, kristinerosemary, and it is pathetic. Honestly Project Willow, I've just gotten tired of chasing after Stephen Morgan for his endless misogynist pronouncements, but - totally agree, it's unacceptable. He's like a holocaust denier, he's got an argument for everything as to why feminism is evil and men are the continually oppressed victims. It is a point of view which alienates the women on the board, and lessens the perspective available here by about one-half. It's hate, is really what it seems to me; smug, pathological hate, which for some reason has remained opened to debate. I can only engage with it for so long before I feel ill.

I'm 100% behind you PW et al.

There are surely some very gnarly examples on the date rape thread today. The sad thing is that the poster you mentioned, in particular, has some very very brilliant things to say and they really lose their weight and importance when juxtaposed with the misogynist stuff.

I'm a woman and I'm not alienated by talk of a backlash against patriarchy creating an atmosphere where it's okay to demonize men. I disagree that it's a conspiracy, just a shift in consciousness. I think women have to confront their own shadows now, and realize that we also have it within us to oppress, bully and stifle debate.

Willow, I wouldn't take it so seriously. Everyone's perception's are manipulated to a greater or lesser extent. Just another face of "divide & conquer."
I think that Gloria Steinem even admitted a few years back that MS magazine was funded by the CIA & various banking interests. Their motives in promoting feminism had little to do with equality and everything to do with tapping a traditionally under-utilized source of cash. If you get women in the workforce you can tax them & sell them crap they don't need. Plus you have the added benefit of tearing children from their families & tossing them into 'the system" at an even earlier age.

I've been with my wife for over 20 years. We are a team. We both work & we both do household chores. There is no ruler. & I ain't no effing king. But my 84 year mother still insists that I'm "the head of the household." I've learned to laugh at it because beating my head against that wall just gives me a headache.

I do think that, amongst certain segments of the female population, "equality" means isolating the most idiotic aspects of being male and copying them.

In my opinion, that's a pretty feeble-minded plan.

I love jezebel, but it's kind of an apples/oranges to compare it to the RI board. It's a commercial site that seeks to attract a specific pro-females-are-smart-witty-cool-and-independent psychographic, and it almost always does a commendable, honest and highly enjoyable job while doing so. Can we not just love it for what it is, without using it as a club with which to beat this forum?

Because while I totally agree that this site is hostile to women, as well as male-dominated, as well as not exactly characterized by the over-all tone of joie-de-vivre with which posters approach the topics or the world, as well as covering a wide enough range of subjects that there's probably something somewhere here to offend everybody, I don't think it's at all true that it's any more hostile to everyone and everything than any other equivalently sized heterogeneous voluntary-membership special-interest oriented community discussion board. Special-interest peoples are typically bickering peoples, whether the special interest is the flora and fauna of Papua New Guinea or the paranormal and deep-political currents of contemporary western civilization.

Also, since today is my precautionary-announcement-that-appears-to-criticize-the-poster-who-started-the-thread-when-in-fact-I-agree-with-him-or-her day:

I think it's both wrong and counterproductive implicitly to frame any discussion of widespread cultural hostility to women, or of the normative status of male-dominated public discourse (or, for that matter, any other common-to-the-point-of-nearly-universal social manifestation of sexism) as if sexism was a form of discrimination that's exclusively practiced by and subscribed to by men who are acting with the express and witting aim of injuring, weakening or silencing women. Because it really isn't. Misogyny is such a deeply rooted and longstanding part of contemporary society -- plus every one of its immediate family of predecessor societies! -- that it's practically like it exists in some form on a molecular level in every person who's a part of that culture. Although it's beyond dispute that it does much, much more damage of a much, much more serious kind to women than it does to men, and equally beyond dispute that men collectively exercise much, much more economic and political clout at executive levels than women do. So I'm not saying anything as namby-pamby-assed as: "Oh, gosh, we're all victims here." Because, for one thing, while many women are truly so victimized by sexism and its consequences that they're literally not in a position to speak, I wouldn't want to show as much disrespect to either them or myself as I'd have to in order to claim that my experience of misogyny was the same as theirs. Primarily because I was fucking lucky to be born white and to have had access to a lot more class privileges than most people of either gender all over the world do, as well as to the regular old limited, precarious and dubiously advantageous economic advantages that most white Americans whose hopeless poverty hasn't made them all-but-invisible usually do have some access to.

And owing to those things, to some extent, I can refuse to cooperate with victimhood and...you know: Choose to pay the price of a modest uptick in the amount-of-externally-originating-hostility-encountered in exchange for freedom from self-condemnation, self-loathing and/or self-denial. Sometimes. On a good day. Still. That's a much better deal than most people get wrt overcoming gender-based oppression, I'm pretty sure. Which is a horrible thought, because it sure as hell isn't any joyride. In fact, it's more what you might call an unrelentingly painful burden and a major fucking drag. Not that I'm complaining. Because, naturally, why, oh my goodness, I'm enough of a part of a misogynist culture I live in to feel the need to draw the line somewhere. I wouldn't want anyone to think I was a cranky bitch or anything like that just because I'm all, like, wimministic and stuff.

Willow, thanks for starting this and also for what I hope will be your generosity toward letting me vent in a free-associative manner without ever really getting either on- or off-topic. Please know that I got your back, should your back turn out to be in need any gotting.

Demonization is probably too strong a term, but I certainly see young men generally becoming a little less vital, more bitchy, less well...manly. It appears they are even becoming smaller, physically, weaker chinned, and less muscled. It's weird. We used to have a term when I was a kid for kids that looked like this--it was "rabbity"

Sperm counts are plummeting. This isn't a theory-- this is fact. It's astonishing by how large an amount, too. This is probably beside the point, but it may be part of a dynamic. Studies have found that when people feel oppressed or dominated imprisoned, they produce less testosterone. This goes for women as well as men. In boys and men, the ramifications are going to be more extreme, as they produce more testosterone, and it's more essential to their basic functioning.

If you raise too many boys in a culture, where from birth they are taught that they are somehow defective because they are male, and then further, sit them in front of a television or computer or gameboy, limit outdoor play, contact with nature, feed them a steady diet of bisphenol wrapped foods and drinks etc... the society may be creating an atmosphere that is both ideologically, environmentally toxic to deep masculinity. Playing violent video games only feeds the most negative aspects of a very superficial kind of masculinity.

I also think it's also not the best idea for males to be raised by single mothers, particularly moms who want to talk all the time, and then specifically encourage communication about the emotional realm. Young boys aren't into it. Women don't understand them, and they shouldn't be pushed too hard in this direction. Dads should nearly always get custody of boys in a divorce situation. Why this isn't done more often is beyond me.

These are very general comments, and I'm sure there are lots of exceptions.

But nevertheless--Let the sh** storm of criticism begin!! :D :D
