not at all pathetic, everybody learns sometime.

I recommend using imgur to host the image. here's the link:
http://imgur.com/
there are other free image hosting sites, like tinypic, imageshack, etc.

so once there you can make an account on thir site, but you don't have to.
the link to upload is in the top left area. you can drag and drop a file, or use the browse your computer option to use an open dialog to find the file. Also you can cross load the image from some other web page, by right clicking on the image and chosing "copy image location" then pasting that into the imgur upload dialog. Then "start uploading" then it'll show you a number of links for the image. pick the "direct link" form, copy it. When posting here just past in the link and surround it in img tags. you can paste it, select the whole thing, and press the img button.
