CNN is nothing but 'Philly cop shot by ISIS fan', and 'El Chapo captured' for the past hour. (I left the TV on while I'm at my desk.)

Not terribly worried about lone-wolf shooters and Mexican cartels at the moment. The LA Gun is the real news.

Yeah, I just checked out the CNN, MSN and Fox News websites. The LA methane leak is nowhere. Absolute crickets.

I've been following this. The NYT has covered it, but only over the past few days.

So they're going to ignite it. Which is probably the best thing to do for our environment.

Nobody's talking about evacuations or, heavens forbid, refugees yet.

However, I do nurse a personal suspicion that the absurdly-sourced "terror threat" that cancelled schools across LA county was just a pretext for a dry run drill that had nothing to do with ISIS, and everything to do with methane.

Fuck, the SoCal Gas leak was known by the company 24 YEARS ago. I can't fathom how that's real. I can't get a handle on whether or not there have been an invisible extra 4.7 million cars on the road for the entirety of the leak since 1992, but either way it's worse than previously reported and predates the known discovery date of October 23, 2015. I don't believe that's the case, but the company still took $900,000 in grants to replace safety valves, which was misappropriated. It's adding 5% to the total methane emissions of the U.S. oil and gas industry right now, but I'm not sure about retroactive amounts.

We should launch a campaign to dismantle SoCal Gas probably. Or force it.

Has the leak been at this intensity for the whole time? Or has it recently hit geyser status or something?

Fukishima. SoCal. BP.

We are really and truly fucked.

I can't determine that info anywhere. I can't imagine so, but hey, could we really be surprised?

Today I learned that Halliburton (well, "Boots and Coots") tried to plug the leak and failed.

http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2015/1 ... hane-leak/

Because natural gas is 80 percent methane, and methane is a potent greenhouse gas, the amount Aliso Canyon has leaked will have the impact of 2.6 to 2.9 million metric tons of carbon for the next 20 years. Put another way, every day the leak continues, it single-handedly accounts for 25 percent of California’s total methane emissions.
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.

True…as much as I'd like to know how bad it was before the October 23 "discovery" of the 7" rupture, it really doesn't matter because it's astoundingly bad now and will continue to be.

This time, the leak began only October 23, 2015.

Had they plugged the old leaks? I haven't seen that anywhere.

I did notice that all media seems careful to only associate a discovery on October 23. That particular pipe might have blown that day, a week before, 6 months before…

Yes, slad, the ruptured casing was first noticed 24 years ago. That this well has had casing problems for so long should be recognized by anyone following this emerging story. This blow-out began on October 23, 2015.

You're not suggesting it has been leaking at this rate for the past 24 years and the residents oddly didn't notice until October, are you?
