Well, Ben Franklin did it...kind of. As far as I understand, he created "sock puppets," female and male pseudonyms. After Silence Dogood--and after he moved to Philadelphia--he wrote again under various women's names. Some of his male pseudonyms: Richard Saunders and Anthony Afterwit, and female pseudonyms: Silence Dogood, Polly Baker, Celia Single.
Not to mention, Voltaire used 173 pseudonyms. Swift used 17 pseudonyms, and Daniel DaFoe used 198 pseudonyms.
Granted, as far as I know, Franklin didn't respond to himself, but, to be sure, if there was an Internet back then, he, no doubt, would've created sock puppets to do just that.
